Neil Doncaster was this afternoon grilled over the 'costly' Rangers dispute over the cinch league sponsorship.

The SPFL chief executive faced questions on the legal dispute between the Ibrox club and the league over the financial sponsorship from the used car company. 

Rangers argued their existing contract with Park Motor Group prohibited them from advertising cinch and their stance was ratified in mediation last April. 

In July, the court of session awarded an interlocuter in Park’s favour and the SPFL sponsorship package was adjusted to preclude Rangers from advertising cinch. 

Rangers won an apology from the SPFL, the promise of an inquiry and a six-figure compensation fee over the lengthy legal dispute.

This afternoon, Doncaster was quizzed on the matter as he appeared on BBC Sportsound, as he stated: "It's certainly important to look forward rather than back - we've drawn a line under it. I'm delighted with the way that we have been able to work with all of our member clubs, including Rangers, in relation to a number of issues since drawing a line under that dispute.

"It's been very helpful having James Bisgrove on the board. I think he and John Bennett are doing what they can to strengthen relationships across the whole of the game and I think that is good for all of us at a time when you are out in the market with sponsorship - to have everyone on the same page is fundamentally important."

Asked whether he has a better working relationship with the current Ibrox board than the previous regime by Michael Stewart, Doncaster said: "It's an interesting question, Michael. I'm sure you will forgive me for saying I want to look forward not back."

The SPFL supremo then claimed compensation figures were "wide of the mark" as he suggested the independent governance review could see a rule change over sponsorships in Scotland when pushed on the 'costly' dispute.

He said: "I think some of the figures that you will have seen in the media are just way over he top and entirely wide of the mark. But certainly, it's important that we always look back and see where we could have done things better.

"We have undertaken a governance review which has been carried out independently and one of the areas that is looking at is what can we do in terms of the rules to try and prevent situations like this happening again. Down south of the border they have different rules where the league is guaranteed exclusivity in certain sectors or clubs have to give their contracts to the league so that the league understands what it is dealing with. We don't have those rules at the moment in Scotland - we just need to look at if there are any similar rules that we could put in place that might make things better going forward."

Cinch will end their Scottish Premiership sponsorship this summer - three years into an initial five-year term. The company will pull out after activating an exit clause from the deal agreed in 2021.

Doncaster explained: "When we did the deal back in 2021, cinch had the ability to come out after three years - normally you expect sponsorship to be a three-year term, maybe slightly more. They initially agreed a five-year term, they had the option to come out early. The whole car market has changed enormously over the piece - we understand that. Ultimately, they have exercised their right to exit."
