The midfielder was speaking ahead of tomorrow's Champions League tie at Ibrox.
What is the biggest difference between the Champions League and Europa League?
The standard of players and teams is miles apart in the Champions League. The Europa League is a great competition and we did so well to reach the final but the Champions League is a step up.
If we want to get something from the group you could say it is probably a must-win. I think if we get a result and then we have two massive games, especially the one at Ibrox against Ajax. If we want to do something we need to get a result. What do we need to change? Our game plan going into Anfield is similar to what we are trying to do tomorrow. We went to Anfield trying to get a result and this game is the same. We will come out the traps, with everyone behind us and we will try to put the pressure on them. We want to start quickly. We tried to do that at Anfield but they had the backing there and it is a tough place to go as everyone in world football knows. Hopefully, with everyone behind us we can do something special.
Are you confident heading into tomorrow?
The last few weeks have been better and we are creating a lot more chances. We have had a lot better individual performances which helps. We believe we can get a result. I don’t think you should field a team if you didn’t. We have to believe we can get three points. The atmosphere is great in the team and we are raring to go.
Have you enjoyed the Champions League pressure?
I haven’t enjoyed the results, not one bit! Before every game, you are excited to show what you can do but the results haven’t been good enough. We don’t like it as much as the fans and we want to rectify that and we need points on the board if we want to get something from the group. We are going to try to win the game.
How disappointed were you after Anfield?
We were all disappointed to lose any game. Going to Anfield we knew how tough it would be. People talked about how they were in a sticky patch but it is still Liverpool. They have achieved great things and they aren’t in crisis, they are still an unbelievable team with unbelievable players. It will be a tough night and we will try to take the game to them but we know it will be a tough night.
There’s something special about Ibrox on European nights, anyone who has been here will have felt the atmosphere, felt the aura around the place. There’s just something that happens underneath the lights here, I don’t know what it is, I can’t put my finger on it. It gets everyone and gives you a lift. There’s something in the air and hopefully that can be the same again tomorrow.
How do you look ahead to the midfield battle?
It’s great to come up against these players but they’re on the other team, you’ve got to block that out and play your own game and show them respect to a certain extent, but at the same time show them no respect as well. We have to try and get in amongst it. A lot of players can be great players when they have time on the ball, I think we’re great players when we have time on the ball but when you get up in someone’s face, things change. Hopefully, if we can do that and our midfield match their midfield, that will be key. As long as we’re up against them and laying a glove on them hopefully we can get something.
What was it like facing Liverpool’s new system?
They have changed of late, it wasn’t three against three [in the midfield] like we expected. You’ve got to adapt. In the second half last we got our shape better and got up on top of them. They’ve scored off two set-pieces and we’ve had two big chances. It could have been a bit different of course they dominated the game, dominated possession and created lots of good chances but you’ve got to adapt in times like that. Going into tomorrow, we don’t know if it will be 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. Who knows what they will bring, but we know what we will bring and that’s what we will focus on.
What was the reaction from your friends in Liverpool?
I didn’t want to speak to them, to be honest. The overriding thing for my friends and family is pride which is nice. I didn’t really want to speak about the loss but I had a few nice messages as well.
How important is it to show aggression but keep 11 men on the park?
It would help [to keep 11 on the park]! At Ibrox, you have to get up against people, get the crowd up, get the crowd going and try to instil a bit of fear in the opposition. If we can get up to them and in their faces, it might leave us open a bit and everyone will have to be brave in the stands and bear with us. If we can do that, that’s the only way we can get a result against a team like Liverpool who are really talented.
