Rangers return to league action on Sunday evening as St Johnstone make the trip south to Ibrox.

Philippe Clement's men will be hoping to put Thursday's Europa League humbling to Lyon behind them.

Simo Valakari will manage the Perth Saints for the first time this week after the former Motherwell midfielder was appointed as Craig Levein's successor.

After the European exertions in midweek, what team is likely to take the field on Sunday?

Philippe Clement has some big calls to make as Rangers return to domestic duties. The first concerns the backline.

James Tavernier was surprisingly substituted against Lyon but the captain really should've been replaced before he eventually was. He won't be up against such quality on Sunday but he isn't offering enough to merit a first-team place. Neraysho Kasanwirjo and Dujon Sterling are better options currently. Sterling should get the nod with Kasanwirjo taking up position on the left which will allow Jefte to start in the more advanced left-wing position.

This change will allow Nedim Bajrami the opportunity to play in his preferred No.10 position with Tom Lawrence likely missing out after picking up a hamstring injury in midweek.

The other big call concerns right-wing. Vaclav Cerny doesn't deserve to start given recent performances therefore the manager may call upon Ross McCausland as a natural replacement.

However, the big news this week is the return of Ianis Hagi to the first team fold. Starting the Romanian would surely give the team and fanbase a lift and his creativity will be useful against a St Johnstone side who are likely to make life difficult for Rangers.

If Philippe Clement had to pick a team purely on form this weekend he would be asking St Johnstone to play seven-a-side at the Ibrox Complex. The Belgian simply must make changes for the return to Premiership action. If the same players have the same approach, the reaction from the fans will speak volumes, regardless of the result.

James Tavernier should be taken out of the team for his own good. If Rangers believe that Dujon Sterling is the long-term answer at right-back then now is his chance to prove it. If Clement feels that Nana has potential on either side, then now is his chance to prove it.

That would allow Jefte to move up a line and, in turn, allow Nedim Bajrami to operate from his favoured central berth. On the right, Vaclav Cerny should be dropped. Ross McCausland is the only natural replacement.

The spine of the team - Butland, Souttar and Propper, Barron and Diomande and Dessers - will remain the same. There are questions about each, right enough.
