Giovanni van Bronckhorst has revealed a single moment in the 3-1 loss to Hibs in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final set Calvin Bassey on his way to becoming an Ibrox icon.
The 22-year-old has been one of the most important players on the run to the Europa League final with his pace and power a significant factor in overcoming Leipzig in the semi-final last night.
Rangers went through after a 3-1 win over the Bundesliga giants after an emotional night under the Ibrox lights - with Bassey a stand out.
He was used primarily as a left-back under the previous manager Steven Gerrard, but van Bronckhorst - watching from the stand having been appointed the day before - quickly spied attributes that could see him used in a more regular central role.
He said: "With Calvin, the first game I saw was the loss against Hibs in the semi-final.
"There was one moment you could see him pushing forward and marking forward with a great pressure moment.
"He was very disappointed with the loss but I remembered that moment and I told him the next day that I saw what he could bring to this team.
"His development has been amazing playing left-back, playing left central defender.
"I'm so happy for him."
