What's your reaction?
Very disappointed. We knew the Champions League would be a high level and what we faced today, I think it showed throughout the game, how good and strong they are. You have to be 100 percent to be ready for the game and you saw everything goes quicker in the Champions League, the pressure, the thinking on the ball, the ball control, the speed of passing, it's all on a really high level. In the first half especially we couldn't reach that level and we struggled. Every mistake we made got punished by Ajax.
Are the players doing what you asked them?
It's difficult, you don't want to give space away against Ajax. We gave less space away in the second half because we gave a little bit too much space away defensively. We went too quick with our opponents who dragged them away to make space. In those monments we should have stayed more in our zones which we didn't do well. Every mistake you make gets punished.
Are you happy with the level of commitment your squad is showing?
The performance wasn't good. The players are committed. They want to play the way we want. They want to fight. They want to work hard but it looks against an opponent like Ajax when you're not organised the way you should be that is going to be really tough because the level we are used to and the level we have to reach in the Champions League is a big difference.
Was James Tavernier taken off with an injury?
Tav had already got a knock a couple of weeks ago and he's struggling a little bit. Also with his fitness. It was good to change him because we could put Leon in as he was struggling a bit in the first half.
Do you feel you've been backed enough at this level to compete in the Champions League?
To compete in the Champions League you need hundreds of millions. Otherwise, you can't compete. Look at the squads we are facing. Ajax sold players for over £200m, Liverpool too. For us to compete with that is too much to ask. We want to compete but we want to compete with the squad we have and the squad we are able and capable of making. We knew it was going to be tough and it was today.
