AJAX defender and former Rangers star Calvin Bassey spoke to Derek Clark and various other journalists following the Champions League clash in Amsterdam.

Here is everything he had to say.

Calvin Bassey, how are you today?

I have mixed emotions. I thank God for my Champions League debut. It’s a pleasure but it’s bittersweet because it was against some friends really who I’ve been with every day for the past two years. But I’m just happy we got the win.

Ajax is very happy with you, you too?

Yeah, of course! I’m happy to be here, I’m buzzing to be here and I just want to get better. I’ve said before that I felt this was the right step for me and the best decision for me to come to Ajax.

They always say in Scotland, the atmosphere at Ibrox Park and Celtic Park but is the atmosphere here in Amsterdam not also very good?

Of course, I think you saw today that the stadium was bouncing. I’m trying to speak to Jurrien two metres away from me and he can’t hear me. It’s unbelievable and we’re just pleased to get the win.

How's your adaptation to Ajax going?

It’s not really a question I can answer myself because it depends on how you lot see from watching the games but I’m enjoying learning. We speak a lot, me, Daley Blind and the trainer about the best solutions, what we can do better and stuff like that. I’m enjoying it and I’m trying to learn. You are the guys watching so you can see if I’m fitting in or not.

Rangers Review:

What did you think of the level you were playing at today?

Of course, it’s the Champions League, it’s the best tournament in football. You know the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition. You’ve got to be careful and make the right decisions and I think we did that as a team today.

Have you had a chance to speak to some of your former teammates or the manager?

Yeah, I spoke to them but it’s a hard one.

The way things went tonight does it feel like you made the right decision to come here?

For me, it’s not about proving a point or anything like that. It was about coming out here and giving 100 per cent. It’s just a coincidence that we were in the same group. We just gave our best and we got the win.

You achieved a lot of good results with Rangers in Europe last season, were you surprised by them?

We did video analysis on them and we knew their strengths. We knew where we thought we could get the edge and we just tried to execute the plan as best as we could. We know that they’ve got bundles of talent in that team and I know it as well. Sometimes it’s just how the game goes and we gave 100 per cent.

Can you speak about what Giovanni van Bronckhorst did for your career and his qualities as a coach?

He’s very smart. He’s a top manager and he is someone who put his trust in me. He gave me my chance and he gave me the opportunity to spread my wings and go on and play.

He has been a very great part of my career so far and I was happy I worked with him.

How is your relationship with your teammates?

It’s all the same. Off the pitch we’re fine but once we cross that white line if we’re playing against each other, we both want to win. It’s just about switching the mentality to try to win the game. Right now I’m an Ajax player and I’m giving 100 per cent for Ajax.
