Jurgen Klopp spoke to the media after Liverpool won out convincing winners over Rangers at Anfield in a 2-0 victory.
What did you make of the game?
A good game. It was the game we wanted to play. A really good defensive performance with a new structure. Offensively we created an awful lot, the Rangers goalie had a couple of really nice saves and we missed some others but I like it a lot. The two goals we scored, really nice, one was a pen but the move from Luis for the pen was really good. We played good in these areas. And the free kick from Trent was outstanding. I say it before, set-piece goals are my favourite goals because you wait to celebrate them. In the end Rangers came up a bit but they only had one situation really when we had to make a save. Apart from that, I liked the game a lot.
Was there any frustration you didn't win by more?
No frustration at all. I didn’t want to sit here now and talk about a 4-0 or whatever, I just wanted three points. Let’s keep going.
Is there a sense Darwin Nunez needs a goal to get off and running?
I think you can see that. The way the boys up front moved today together was extremely good for only one session. And that was low intensity because we played recently. Everyone saw tonight it will happen. So all good…
There's been some criticism recently, did you feel you bounced back tonight?
Rightly so. I can’t wait for the moment when I can read newspapers again because I haven’t read them for weeks. I don’t know what is happening in the world to be honest. I know the big news. I know the bad news. Otherwise, I’ve no clue! The criticism was completely fine. We are not over the moon about our own situation. But we have played some really good games. It is not like ten years ago, it is not too long ago. And Champions League nights in Liverpool are always usually quite enjoyable. I saw tonight a team that was hugely committed and that is what I like a lot.
Were you surprised Rangers played with five at the back?
I think they played v Napoli five and against Ajax, they started then changed? No, we were not surprised. We had to be prepared for both. Our set-up was the biggest surprise tonight. We surprised ourselves! And yes, this situation can happen. It can be difficult to defend against. I think Diogo Jota moved particularly well between the lines and Darwin kept working away. But we know next week we come to Rangers and we will respect them a lot. It is a different game and a different occasion. We are kind of halfway through. Top result, tough game, the fight was good. We go from here.
Did you play with a new defensive set-up in this game specifically?
Actually, it was nothing to do with this game. It was a little bit to do with the game, but not too much. We wanted to defend differently to what we usually do. It was for us. If someone criticised our defence it was because of our high line. It was rare teams created a lot of chances against us but it was happening a bit more recently. That’s why we wanted to close the gaps and set it up slightly differently. We knew the left side is the creative side for Rangers with Ryan and Barisic and Tony is a big threat in the finishing situation but apart from that, it wasn’t (to do with Rangers).
What did you make of Trent Alexander-Arnold's goal?
A wonderful goal. What can I say? It is normal for Trent. I am happy that he still has it in his locker.
Did you see a gulf in class with Rangers?
No. I don’t recognise that. Rangers is a really good team doing really well who had an exceptional season in Europe last season and were unlucky when they lost the final. They then qualified for the Champions League. It is all possible. You can’t have it all in one. You have to have time to adapt in Europe. I am not sure if this is the wrong press conference to say the word Celtic. You might all stand up and go. But both of these clubs made a big step in the last few years. And if you want you can talk about the gulf but you saw how close they came and that’s the way I would look at it. But you are right, it is not really my problem!
