Every word of the defender's press conference after joining the club from Chelsea.
How was your first week at the club?
It’s been really good. I’ve been building chemistry with the lads and everyone has welcomed me pretty well. We are just trying to build chemistry to reach our goals for the season.
You’ve played in different positions in your career, what do you think are your key strengths?
I like to prioritise my defending. A lot of defenders now get judged on their stats and what they do up the pitch but defensively, they’re not great. I like to make sure I do my defending, win my one-on-one battles and then go forward to express myself - knowing my teammates and defenders have trusted me to defend.
Do you see yourself as a centre-back?
I don’t play centre-back. I play right-back or left-back. I can fill in at centre-back and I’m happy to but I wouldn’t say that my strength is playing at centre-back.
Can James Tavernier and Connor Goldson be role models after their success following moves from England?
I’ve watched Tav and Connor play when I’ve watched Rangers on TV. They’ve been the main guys and that’s why they’ve been around for so long. It’s great to learn from them in training every day, especially Tav as he plays the same position as me.
How’s it been with Tavernier so far?
Really good. He was the first one who messaged me when I signed. He welcomed me and said to let him know if I need anything. On the training pitch, we’ve been on different teams and it’s been good to see the difference between us.
Relationship with Michael Beale?
I worked with him when I was 13 but I first met him when I was like seven or eight in development centres around London. When you’re younger at Chelsea, you start at development centres from six and you do that for two years before joining the academy. He was the head of south London, and I was north, but when I arrived he was dealing with the Under-14s and I played up.
You enjoyed huge success in Chelsea’s academy, do you have that winning mentality instilled in you from then?
Yeah, because at Chelsea everything was about winning. We couldn’t take second place, it was all about winning and I can feel that here as well - you need to win. None of my loans have been at winning teams, it’s been about digging deep. I’ve got that mentality and the winning mentality, so it’s about putting them together to win the next trophy.

How was your first conversation with the manager because you had lots of interest in England?
I had loads of interest in England but the way he (Beale) presented it, and explained how I would fit in was something that I couldn’t turn down. Rangers being a big club was the icing on the cake.
Competing with Tavernier?
It’s about competing together but I’m not just tied down to one role. I can play many roles in this team so I don’t fear Tav being the captain at right-back. It’s about competition and we need competition in every area of the pitch. That’s how everyone gets better and nobody slips off. You need that for the whole season and there’s more than one game every week.
Looking to settle down in Glasgow?
It was the right time for me to leave Chelsea. I went on loans after my injuries and illness but it was time to find somewhere to settle down and be for a long time. Chelsea is a hard place to get in the team and there are a lot of boys from over the years who never got near the pitch. I had the privilege to do that on a couple of occasions but coming here felt right.
What was the deciding factor in choosing Rangers over other options?
Europe is number one and Rangers is a big club with a big fanbase. I can see the togetherness at the club and I spoke to Calvin (Bassey) before I arrived because we are close - he said it was one of the best places to come. With his words, the gaffer's words and the club in general, I had to come.
Hoping to emulate Bassey’s success at Rangers?
Obviously, we are different players but his pathway is quite similar. We played against each other in the academies, he got the move and I got the move - hopefully, I can go in the same direction.
Looking forward to the physical aspect of Scottish football?
I’m just looking forward to being on the pitch. I’m happy to be on the pitch no matter what position it and whoever is up against me will know they’re in for a tough game.
