Rangers manager Philippe Clement insists he’s “not a board member” amidst the ongoing executive unrest at Ibrox.
Last weekend John Bennett stood down as chairman due to health concerns, prompting former chairman Dave King to launch a bid for a second term at Ibrox. King has been vocal in his criticism of current board members, suggesting that Rangers are in need of a major rebuild not dissimilar to that which was undertaken in 2015.
John Gilligan has been appointed as the club’s temporary chairman while the search for a successor and CEO continues. Clement, who met with Gilligan this week, says that “stability” is the most important factor at Rangers moving forward, suggesting that “if there’s no unity you cannot have a good club”.
“I sat down with all three who will take over the things that John Bennett was doing. So we had talks about that to keep also consistency in the story,” Clement said.

“They all know John well so I was happy that they knew already a lot of things. We could discuss also several things and [will] work hard to make it a lot better.
“It's for everybody important that there's stability in the club otherwise you cannot work. So everybody understands where we are at the moment and where we want to get to. So everybody is very motivated for that.”
Since arriving at Rangers last October, Clement has been forced to focus on matters aside from football often due to a summer rebuild, squad restructure, stadium construction issue and CEO departure. As far as he’s concerned, this is a moment for unity and not division as the Belgian stressed the need for support from above.
“Of course, if there's no unity you cannot have a good club. That's clear,” Clement added.
“But I'm not a board member here, I'm not a politician. I'm the manager of the club. I'm here to focus on football, on sports, on the team, on making them better, on the project for the future. I've engaged myself in the long term in that way. So I'm focused on that, on the sport side. And the rest is for other people to arrange really well. But it's important that they support the sport side and that's what I feel for the moment.”
