It’s exactly two weeks since I looked back on one year of Philippe Clement and asked the fatal question - will he celebrate a second Rangers anniversary?

In this writer’s opinion, the last fortnight has answered that query emphatically.

Defeats on the road to Kilmarnock and Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership - ensuring that Rangers’ away record in the league reads an eye-watering two wins in the last 10 attempts - have made up the minds of many in the support including my own. It’s time for change.

Rangers fans have had enough. That extends beyond the pitch and the dugout to those in the boardroom who are responsible for a succession of poor decisions in the running of this football club. And that’s putting it mildly.

The synergy with fans that Clement worked hard to restore has been obliterated, and then some. Compared to this time last year Rangers are weaker all over the pitch.

Quite simply, fans have had enough of poor results and even poorer performances.

While those in the stands will always be thankful for the continued investment of those who lead this football club, that cannot come at the expense of blind loyalty. The most recent accounts were filled with troubling losses and no obvious answer as to how things get better soon. The leadership has been nowhere near good enough.

The issuing of more shares to raise funds simply covers up past errors. Rangers are not learning from their mistakes. John Bennett’s tenure as chairman was full of mismanagement but everyone who has held that office of late is responsible for where we are now.

The problem is Rangers need a way out. The board need to make the correct strategic decisions and the fanbase holds little confidence in those qualities at present.

This board must, as a matter of urgency, employ people who are experienced in the art of running a football club and implementing a long-term structure. That should have been the case six months ago, not by Christmas.

They must also step up and recognise that the on-field situation is absolutely unsustainable. Rangers are currently playing and performing like a mid-table football club. On a points basis, they are.

The decline from a European final two and a half years ago is excruciating. The decline in the standards of player and squad equally worrying. Everything has dropped off of a cliff since the summer of 2021.

After 10 league games this season, Philippe Clement’s side are closer to 8th than 2nd. Motherwell are three points behind in fourth.

There are no excuses for the football currently on show which is painful to watch. Rangers don’t dominate or create a sufficient number of chances, we rely too heavily on one of our attackers conjuring up some magic in the final third.

Harsh? Well, look at the wins over St Mirren, Dundee Utd, Hibs, Motherwell and even the goal against Aberdeen - all deriving from ‘moments’. In every single game, the opposition have been on top for key periods. Performances against Malmo or Ross County are outliers in a turgid run of football since Motherwell which started the beginning of our title collapse in March.

The reasoning offered up for performances and results at the moment from Clement are always the same - we are not aggressive enough, we don’t win our duels, we need to create more… And yet the formation, key selection calls and tactics remain the same.

Rangers play too many long balls to a striker who can’t hold up the play and their midfield is constantly exposed. James Tavernier looks bereft of confidence and is past his best but continues to play at right-back.

We are a team who don’t have a discernable style. Fans are not entertained or excited. When you don’t have results and performances, frustration ensues.

The manager can speak with confidence after a win over FCSB but following that up by sneaking a win over St Mirren and losing to Aberdeen doesn’t support his style.

For the majority of fans change is now required, that’s certainly my view.

This painful mess is now in the hands of a boardroom who have, throughout the years, made mistake after mistake. Somehow they must fix this.

There are no answers, no quick fixes and no obvious solutions. But excuses won’t wash with a fanbase who have put up with too many and are watching a situation that shows no sign of letting up.
