Loyalty or logic? Clement's defining Dujon Sterling and James Tavernier decision
What are your thoughts?
It was a very strong performance as a team. Sticking to the plan, being very disciplined and using the spaces not perfectly, but a lot of times really good and creating good chances out of that. So, that's for me the only minor (criticism), but it stays an important thing. There’s disappointment that we didn't win the game. So, that's the next step we need to take to win these kind of games by being more efficient. But I saw a lot of positive things and I need to praise the whole team for that. What they showed today in the discipline, to stick to the plan and to do the right things on the ball.
Are you and the players disappointed not to have won the match?
Yes, it's a double feeling. It's not only disappointment, of course, because you need to see also the positives about today. But that needs to be our mentality. I don't want players who are happy with a point. We played also to get the three points. It's not that in the last 10-15 minutes we only defended. We went for the three points and that's the mentality I want to see every time against every opponent. So we need to continue that way. I think there were a lot of positives again this evening. You See how many new players on the pitch were doing a really good job. I think our midfield was massive today, winning a lot of duels. Our offensive players created a lot of chances. Our defence was really solid, really compact. Jack (Butland) didn't have to do too many saves or almost no saves today. So, coming to a place like Olympiacos, it's a really big thing because it's a good team and they've shown that already, for example, against Braga and Malmo.
How difficult a decision was it to leave your captain out of the side?
That’s never an easy decision but I want more than one captain in the group. Also, if you come to a certain age, you cannot play 60 games anymore at the same level. So, that's normal. We knew that before the season. We talked about that before the season also. Tav is just a captain. He will continue like that and he will play more games this season. It's about competition for the spots for everybody. It's not about one player or one ego or one thing. It's about one team. It's about winning together. And he showed it also. Now, in the last couple of weeks also, by playing in a higher position in moments and doing the job for the team. So, that's what I expect. That's Rangers. One team, one family. Everybody going for one thing.
Did that feel like a big performance from Nicolas Raskin?
Nico is growing. We had a very important player last season in the midfield also. It's now with a lot of experience. It's now two young guys with a lot of energy who are still learning details of the game. But they are really hungry to learn. And we did a lot of video sessions in the last couple of weeks. And they take really good steps forward. So, they both played a massive game for me. And Dio also. In his role that he had. So, it was important against them to have control of the midfield. Because otherwise you always lose the game against Olympiacos. And not only defending wise. But also offensive wise, to pick out the right passes in the moments we could make the transition. So yeah. I'm pleased about that. But that's the nice thing about this group. It's not a start. The start was in August or for some players in September. But it's the beginning. They can only grow. They can only become better if they keep this hunger, desire. And we're going to work hard on that. To go in every detail. To make things better. And to give them more experiences. So evenings like this are crucial for that. They learn a lot against opponents from this level. And they are hungry to become better. So they will grow out of that.
Will one victory guarantee you a play-off place?
For those who know me well. Because some of you may know me very well. I never settle about things. I don't put goals also before the games because that means that you start to calculate that against certain teams you cannot get points. It's impossible. I don't believe in that. I've seen enough when I was a player or a manager. That miracles are possible If you go for it. So we will go for that the next month against these really big teams. So I think we are on track. In that way. To take these seven points. I hoped it was nine. I think it was possible today. We had the chances to win this game. So in that part the disappointment is there. But it's not about calculating. It's the next couple of months. To dig in every time in these European games. And make it a special night. In that way I need to give praise also to the fans who were here today. Because we came here one hour and a half before the game and they were already singing. Creating a very positive atmosphere. During the game, after the game and it gives a lot of energy to my team also. So I'm very happy to see that also.
What does it say about Cyriel to miss the chances and then score the goal?
It is crucial, that is why we have been working not only him but the whole squad from October last season but we had to stat again. This is football. And I want to see that mentality. Every time. It's very important in the way I want to see a dressing room. In the way I want to see a team on the pitch. And the last couple of months, they had a few banks on their heads. That we could use as a lesson to get this mentality. We have Cyril. But we have other examples also. Vaclav was really down. After Malmo early on, Lyon, missing the chances. He reacted in the right way. Because it's so crucial in football. That you don't look back and look forward and you dig in every time. When things don't go your way. You need to force it your way. And that's what we want to do in the next couple of months.
