Robby McCrorie: Making his Rangers debut – he had no saves to make in the opening half. Was extremely brave to collect the ball at the feet of Santos, who was sent off for cynically kicking him in the head. Held a shot well from Embalo. 7
Nathan Patterson: Making his second start of the season he began brightly. Was the only player in the team who possesses tangible natural acceleration that can take players out of the game and when he was able to sit high, it allowed Rangers a threat in behind. He at times wasn’t covered well enough by his midfield and his runs could have been picked out with more urgency and intention. 6
Connor Goldson: The captain on the night was making his 80th successive appearance for the club, in itself a remarkable achievement. He was booked for a mistimed challenge as Alashkert countered. Also had a shot from distance near the close of the opening half that almost found the postage stamp. Made a big mistake to leave a crossed ball on 55 minutes that Embalo almost turned in. 6
Filip Helander: Restored to the starting XI, he was called upon a couple of times in early periods to intervene. Notably blocking a ball across the box which could otherwise have been troublesome for the visitors. 6
Borna Barisic: Without Ryan Kent ahead of him, who would naturally offer width in behind and a constant out ball, he was slightly isolated on the left. Still got forward to put in a few deliveries, but he almost created a chance for the opposition with a careless backwards header. Lost his man to concede an excellent chance early in the second period. Gave away a free-kick in a dangerous area late on and had a generally rusty second period. 5
Steven Davis: Allowed Rangers to play out from the back by receiving the ball whenever a pass was on. Rescinded possession carelessly at one point that almost saw the hosts spring an opening. Provided a lovely stand-up for Hagi soon after half-time in an attempt to up the tempo. 6
Glen Kamara: Returning to the European fold for the first time this season following suspension, Kamara had a fairly quiet game. Was able to burst forward and had a couple of penalty box entries that could have been decisive with more of a killer instinct in the circumstances. Won a clever free-kick late on to kill time. 6
Scott Arfield: Combined well with Patterson on the right and was also willing to run beyond Morelos and link up. On a couple of occasions, he was guilty of not covering the space left in the right-back area. Was unfortunate to not see a clever combination with Morelos end in a goal. Didn’t get out to a cross quick enough in the second period that nearly turned into a home goal. 6
Joe Aribo: Playing in the front line, he was the team’s ball-carrier. Looked very good when he managed to stick close to Morelos and interchange and was so close to seeing a shot that clipped the post nestle in the back of the net. Provided some bursts of energy in a flat second half from his side and struck the bar late on. 7
Ianis Hagi: Started the game very brightly and was his side’s best player for a period. He made a number of progressive passes early on, received and turned well in dangerous areas to take his team forward – increasing the pace of play in doing so. Also produced a deft drag-back to send through Patterson. Close with a header on 50 minutes. Replaced on the hour. 6
Alfredo Morelos: Started the game sharply but should have had two goals in the opening 45. Lobbed the ball over the bar from close range and then hit the keeper when through one-on-one. In the second half he became sloppy and wasn’t the same outlet. Snatched at a chance on 71 minutes. 5
Subs:
Cedric Itten: Came on soon after the hour mark to try and bring some more energy to a lethargic front line. Came close with a shot at the front post that went the wrong side of the netting and managed to offer an option at points - perhaps would have envisioned a more notable impact. Won a late free-kick well. 3
