STEVEN GERRARD reckons Ryan Porteous let Hibernian down with his 'leg-breaking' tackle during Rangers' 2-1 Premiership victory at Ibrox.

Porteous was given a straight red card by referee Nick Walsh for a dangerous lunge on Joe Aribo that sparked a heated touchline debate between Gerrard and Hibs assistant manager John Potter.

The moment of madness would cost the visitors dear as Kemar Roofe cancelled out Kevin Nisbet's early opener before Alfredo Morelos won it for the champions.

Porteous has been involved in a series of flashpoints against Rangers in recent years and manager Jack Ross admitted he could understand why Walsh had sent the stopper off on the half hour mark.

Gerrard pulled no punches in his assessment of the challenge and believes Porteous hasn't learned his lesson after a rush of blood that ultimately undermined Hibs' chances of clinching top spot in the Premiership.

Gerrard said: "Well look, there is a couple of things on this. I know one or two things about bad tackles because I have made a few myself, so I am not in a glass house here.

"It’s a wild tackle. It’s a leg-breaking tackle if he catches him.

"The kid only has to play the ball. I don’t know why there is any reason that he wants to go in with that intent and it is the second time that he has done it against us because he done it against Lassana Coulibaly not so long ago.

"So the kid is obviously not learning and he has let his manager and his team-mates down today. That is obviously Jack’s business.

"There is no defending a tackle like that because the speed of it, the height of it and the force doesn’t belong on a football pitch.

"I have had to learn over the years myself as a player to learn from those types of moments of madness. So hopefully the kid learns."
