STEVEN GERRARD's ambition could tempt the Rangers manager to swap Glasgow for Newcastle.

That's according to former Celtic full-back Mark Wilson.

The Light Blues gaffer has been installed as one of the frontrunners to become the next permanent manager of the Magpies. 

It comes as the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, headed by multi-billionaire Mohammed Bin Salman, finally completed a £300million takeover deal for the north-east club.

Mike Ashley's 14-year tenure has come to an end, as the club enter a new, exciting era under the stewardship of the oil-rich state.

Speaking on Clyde Superscoreboard, Wilson reckons Gerrard could be swayed to join Newcastle from Rangers.

He said: "It's based on one, Steven Gerrard being a big name, and two, Steven Gerrard being successful.

"He wins the league, and his record in European competition has certainly got people taking notice.

"Tactically, the way he plays the game, and a club like Newcastle, a club the size of it, would be looking at someone with his experience who has dealt with a high pressure environment, that Glasgow brings.

"He can tactically work out things against bigger sides.

"Newcastle are a huge club, but when they come up against the bigger teams in the English Premier League they have got to come up with a plan, and Steven Gerrard is capable of that.

"I think there will be a step in between (going to Liverpool). I don't think that Steven Gerrard going to Newcastle is too far from the mark.

"I think Steven Gerrard cuts a frustrated figure at times, and on Saturday morning I was reading him speaking about spending money, and needing money to even compete in Europe

"Of course he showed how happy he was at the weekend. His ambitions will be to manage in England, never mind Liverpool, obviously that will probably be his final destination.

"To manage in the Premier League is the promised land for any young manager."
