Allan McGregor: Was reintroduced alongside Steven Davis for his experience. Made a strong initial save before the concession of the opener and, that aside, was not called upon. 6
James Tavernier: The captain may have made an error on Wednesday, but also assisted and scored his side’s two goals. Add that to an assist against St Mirren and Brondby and he was one of his side’s form players pre-match. However, his failure to deal with a long ball was the root cause of Bevis Mugabi’s opener. Tavernier's response was as usual so impressive – a wonderful, volleyed goal breaking down the stubborn opposition defence. Minutes later he put the ball on a plate for Fashion Sakala to score. His character to bounce back and give his team a platform was so impressive. 8
Connor Goldson: Gave away the corner that led to the opener, with miscommunication between him and his captain the cause. Recovered well aside from that and helped his side retain pressure high up the pitch. 7
Leon Balogun: Balogun’s consistency has been hugely impressive in recent months – he would, however, have been disappointed to lose the header which led to Motherwell’s opener. That aside, his duels with Connor Shields were in the main successful. 7
Calvin Bassey: With Borna Barisic currently sidelined, Bassey retained the left-back spot. Some early crosses were slightly overhit – his pick-out for Tavernier’s leveller however was bang on. He is improving as a one-on-one threat too but it was his game intelligence that made an impact second half. His overlap created space for Sakala’s goal, his drive saw Stephen O’Donnell dismissed. 7
Steven Davis: Missed midweek but replaced John Lundstram for the tie in Lanarkshire. Picked balls up off his defence well while reacting to long balls and dangerous moments. With Shields contesting Balogun in the air, Davis’ intelligence to stay tight to that situation, mop up and cover space was notable. 8
Glen Kamara: Too slow to look forward at times but grew into the first half. Came to ahead for Rangers’ second, where he resisted playing a safe ball into Aribo to find Tavernier driving into space to assist Sakala. Counterpressed aggressively when needed and worked extremely hard. Scored a rare, but top-class goal, with a low, driven effort. 8
Scott Arfield: Brought in for his first league start of the season after his manager hailed his training level on Friday, with Gerrard saying this was ‘his type of game’ pre-match. He helped build attacks down the right with fluid and quick interplay and had a couple of nearly moments arriving in the box. 7
Joe Aribo: Moved up a line to play off the right and was able to isolate his trickery on Nathan McGinley to a successful degree. At one point, his combination with Davis allowed him a great chance which Liam Kelly saved. He was the visitors' best player until Tavernier changed the game. 7
Alfredo Morelos: Having scored in both of his previous two games, and given Kemar Roofe’s injury record, it made sense that the Colombian would be the one to retain his place. He combined play well which allowed his team to move a congested defensive area. 7
Fashion Sakala: His manager said his inclusion was to provide excitement and pace in behind to try to stretch the game. His start promised much - an early counter-press saw O’Donnell booked and the Zambian seemed unpredictable with the ball at his feet. His header at the end of the first half was exactly what Rangers needed from their front men. Sakala added his side’s third after the break with a drop of the shoulder and drive into the bottom corner. Later, he connected well with a cross to score his hat-trick. 9
Substitutes
Kemar Roofe: Looked sharp and was unfortunate to not make more of a couple of crosses. Scored the sixth. 7
Jack Simpson: Had little to do as Motherwell tried to keep the score down. Asssisted Roofe's goal. 6
Scott Wright: Always tries to impact games instead of see them out. Unfortunate to not see a late drive curl in. 6
