IT was billed as a dead-rubber for Rangers ahead of the game at Lyon.

But both teams certainly tried to have a go to win the match as it finished 1-1.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s unbeaten start to life as Rangers manager continues.

Here’s how Herald & Times Sport rated the Ibrox side on the final matchday of this season’s Europa League group stages.

Jon McLaughlin 6

Nothing he could do about Lyon’s goal. The deflection off Bassey left him rooted. Dealt with everything else convincingly. Huge save at the death.

Nathan Patterson 7

His first start under the new manager. The Scotland star yet again proved he is comfortable at this level. Used in his usual right-back role rather than further forward, unlike previous substitute appearances. Booked.

Connor Goldson 6

A steady performance. Did nothing of any real note, but his standards are so high that he goes under the radar.

Calvin Bassey 7

Unlucky to score an own-goal. Seems more natural at centre-half with every passing game. Handling of Toko-Ekambi prior to his withdrawal was admirable.

Borna Barisic 6

Perhaps a bit suspect at the Lyon goal with his lack of closing down. Another decent performance other than that error. Got forward well.

Glen Kamara 7

Classy and productive as ever. His feinted cross and cut-back for Wright at the first goal was sumptuous. Fans always love a player to display some skills, particularly in a ‘meaningless game’.

John Lundstram 5

A steady enough showing, but had a quiet game overall.

Ianis Hagi 6

In a more natural position with the game in front of him as an attacking midfielder, rather than being played out wide.

Scott Wright 7

It’s fair to say he took his chance. He bagged the opening goal in France. He steadied himself on the edge of the box, before striking on his right. It took a sizable deflection, but the confidence the goal will give Wright can’t be underestimated. He provides greater balance on the right wing.

Ryan Kent 8

Tonight showed what Rangers miss when the tricky attacker is missing. He was simply rested at the weekend as Gio revealed. You could tell that was fresh and raring to go. Was at it from an early stage, taking on his man, which resulted in winning fouls and creating chances. The chip in the build-up for Wright’s goal was silky.

Kemar Roofe 7

His pressing qualities are impressive, and it can be argued they’re better than Morelos’. Link-up play is another strong point as well, with a lot of one-touch lay-offs. Unlucky to have smacked the post after great wing play by Kent.

Subs:

Steven Davis (for kamara, 45’) 6

Kept the ball nicely, as per usual for the midfielder. Cleared a late Lyon chance off the line.

Scott Arfield (for Wright, 60’) 4

Played in an advanced role on the right.

Juninho Bacuna (for Hagi, 60’) 4

Some much-needed minutes for the rarely-seen midfielder.

Jor Aribo (for Roofe, 73’) 3

Showed his versatility to play as a false nine.
