Any injury updates?
No, nobody is back from injury. Of course, we have Morelos and Sakala back from the game in Lyon. Ryan Jack is still out and we have to assess Kemar Roofe who is a doubt for Sunday.
You must feel they are in a really good place after last night?
Very much. It was a tough match. We had some rotations in the team but I think it didn’t change the way or the intensity of how we played or the overall game plan we had. I’m pleased with the performance. Especially away in Europe. I think we did well and left Lyon with a positive feeling. Today it’s recovery and tomorrow we work on the game against Hearts. It’s a very short time but we will be ready for Sunday.
Can you tell us if Ryan Jack’s setback is the same injury?
We still don’t know if it’s the same injury. He had a moment during the last part of training before Lyon. At the end of the session, he went off the pitch with a problem, so we are still diagnosing it. So far, he will not be available for Sunday and hopefully, he will join us soon because he’s working hard. He’s not had much game time in the last few months with some injuries so for him personally it’s not a good moment nor for us as a club because we don’t have Ryan available for games.
So there isn’t a concern this is another long-term injury?
I don’t know. I cannot tell. We have to wait and see.
You are through to the knockout stages of the Europa League, would you fancy a return to Barcelona?
Me? Of course! We have to wait and see the draw but when you are at this stage of the competition and you see the teams involved in the draw, I don’t have a preferred team. We will have to see who we face but there are definitely some teams who will bring some memories back to me.
What are your thoughts on Nathan Patterson so far?
I’m really happy with Nathan. A young player who is really talented and an international for Scotland. You can see what he brings to the team, especially the right full-back position. I have two players who can play there and contribute a lot to this team. His performance yesterday was really good, I’m happy with him and looking forward to working with him for a longer time to develop Nathan into a better player. He gives me a lot of energy and he puts a lot of energy into training and games. He wants to learn so I think that’s very important for a young player.
What’s been the most pleasing aspect of what you have seen from your team?
I think picking up the way I want to play, some principles I want the team to show every game. They are very open in playing with new ideas. For them, it’s also refreshing and we have a nice atmosphere within the team. It’s a very competitive squad we have and there’s a good balance. We have to make sure we are working hard in training and every game to get the result we want. I think that’s where it starts and what I want to see every game.
Calvin Bassey looks good in central defence, could that be his best position long term?
I haven’t seen him play a lot as a left-back. I saw some footage but in my five games here he has played as a central defender. I’m really happy with him, he’s got everything for a modern defender. He’s very quick, he’s good in the air, physically he’s very strong and we are working on his build-up play. He’s a very good kid and, like Nathan, he’s open to learn new things, to be better every game. Those kinds of players will give me a lot of energy to work with them.

How do your team approach this match on Sunday?
Like we always do with every opponent, watch a lot of footage, prepare the team well in having the ball and also defending. That can be different against every opponent we play. We can expect a very difficult game but I’m sure my players will be prepared to face this challenge.
Dave Vos has had experience with young players. Is he going to work with just the first team or will he give guidance below that?
No, I brought him in as my assistant so he will be working with first-team only but we are always in good connection with the academy so that relationship is there. But his main focus will be working with me and the first team.
You have three players away with Nigeria in January, will you play them more in December or will you try other line-ups to get that sorted for their absence?
We know there is a Nations Cup coming in January. That’s something for then, I just focus on what we have until then. That’s our priority. I’m not thinking about resting players because they might play in the African Nations Cup. The main focus is to get three points in every game we play with Rangers.

What has pleased you most about the way the players have taken on your principles and ideas?
All of them. We have to be playing as a team. When we are attacking and defending, I like to be in control of games and sometimes in difficult games you don’t have control. You have to really understand the different moments in games, when to attack, when to come back, making sure we use our strengths in each game and expose weaknesses. That can be different in every game so we always prepare a little bit different so the Hearts preparation will be different from Livingston or Lyon. So my players have to be really sharp at team meetings and training sessions to execute the game plan.
What are the key things to show to win at Tynecastle?
We have to be strong on the ball. It’s a difficult place to come so they will put pressure on us. We did this really well against Lyon. They wanted to pressure us really early and really high. I think we were really in control by then and wanted to make the right decisions with the ball so we could go away from the press at good times in the game while being defensively solid to make sure Hearts can’t be dangerous in the box. We have to have a good overall performance and be at the top of our game.
