NEIL McCANN reckons Rangers supporters have been seeing Alfredo Morelos getting back to his best since Giovanni van Bronckhorst replaced Steven Gerrard in Govan.
The Colombian centre-forward opened the scoring against St Johnstone at Ibrox last night as he turned in Connor Goldson’s glanced header from a corner shortly before half-time.
Morelos then teed up Ryan Kent to send his side into cruise control as the Premiership champions recorded a fifth consecutive league victory – leaving former Rangers winger Neil McCann raving about the 25-year-old’s change in attitude since the new manager was installed.
“It’s not an easy pass,” McCann said of Morelos’ second-half assist. “I’ve said it so many times – if Alfredo Morelos is sharp and gets that edge back to his game and he’s fit, he’s a really good goalscorer.
“He’s a really good target man to work off of. He’s not going to win you big aerial battles but his link-up play has generally been good.
“You don’t score over 100 goals if you’re not a goalscorer. But tonight I felt as though he was really starting to feel himself back in a Rangers jersey and be the player that we all know he can be.”
McCann might well be encouraged by Morelos’ displays of late but at the other end of the park, he admits Rangers have left him downright impressed lately.
Shipping early goals became a hallmark of the last days of Gerrard’s reign at Ibrox but McCann believes his former club have developed a newfound sense of resilience under Van Bronckhorst’s watch.
“In the six games previous to Giovanni coming in, they conceded the first goal,” he explained to Rangers TV. “Now they have five clean sheets in six league games, which is brilliant.
“It’s what you want as a manager – a wee bit of gloss on the performance but first and foremost results.
“That really puts the marker across to Celtic. Giovanni just has to keep winning games and putting the pressure over to the other side of Glasgow.”
