STERN TEST PASSED

A cursory glance at the stats would suggest an easy afternoon for Rangers. And while it was comfortable, with St Mirren only allowed one off-target shot all afternoon, it could've been a tough 90 minutes.

A look back at The Buddies' point against Celtic during the week shows how well organised and difficult to break down Jim Goodwin's side can be. But Rangers raced into a two-goal lead and never looked like giving it up.

Scott Wright's header after 14 minutes was a perfect settler in front of the 500-strong crowd before Alfredo Morelos' 27th minute rebound strike all but sealed the match within 30 minutes.

For Giovanni van Bronckhorst this is a good marker of his side in making pretty light work of a possible banana skin especially with the vastly reduced capacity.

THE WRIGHT IDEA

SCOTT Wright made a difference when he stepped off the bench against Dundee United. And he carried that form into a terrific afternoon at Ibrox where he didn't give opponent Scott Tanser a minute.

From the first whistle he was dynamic and desperate to drive to the box and deliver crosses into the area. His early goal only added to a superb showing.

The other changes, Borna Barisic returning and Joe Aribo starting worked wonders too.

Barisic showed why he's the No1 choice at left-back and Aribo was again a commanding figure in the midfield.

MORELOS MOTIVATED BUT NOT CLINICAL

ALFREDO Morelos notched the goal that killed the match - but in truth he should've had a few more.

The Colombian forward was a livewire in the St Mirren box and came close on a number of occasions.

He was in the right place in the right time for his rebound goal, but with so many chances created there should've been more goals.

It wasn't just Morelos either, 25 shots and 77 per cent possession tells the story of the dominance from the hosts.

But with just seven efforts on target Rangers weren't clinical enough, fortunately for Van Bronckhorst it didn't cost him today as St Mirren never looked like scoring.
