CONNOR GOLDSON'S Rangers contract is set to expire in the summer which could see the defender leave Ibrox on a free transfer.
It'd be a blow for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to lose a key player without receiving a transfer fee; but Alan Hutton reckons club chiefs will keep Goldson until the end of the season instead of letting him got his month "for the sake of a few million".
Former Ibrox full-back Hutton claims it could be worth the risk for Rangers of losing Goldson if he helps them to another league triumph and Champions League qualification before any potential exit.
A second successive league triumph would land the club a major windfall reportedly in the region of £40m with a spot in the group stages of Europe's elite competition up for grabs for the Scottish Premiership champions.
And offering his insight into the contract scenario between Rangers and Goldson, Hutton admitted while it's "not ideal" it may be a risk worth taking for club chiefs.
He told Football Insider: “It shows where they’re at the moment. Looking at the bigger situation, it’s the league title.
“How much this means to Rangers to actually go ahead and win it. They’re not willing to sacrifice their top centre-back for the sake of a few million.
“That’s where they’re at at the moment. Going into the Champions League brings in so much money to the club moving forward. They probably see it as worth the risk.
“I don’t think it’s ideal, letting the contract rundown and letting him leave for nothing.
“It’s a difficult situation. I always believed, for me personally, I would want my future all sewn up and taken care of. Then I could just concentrate solely on my football.
“But they’re willing to take the risk of using Connor Goldson to win the league and get into the Champions League. Then if he wishes to leave, so be it.”
Earlier this month reports claimed Rangers were preparing a fresh push to extend Goldson's terms in Glasgow.
Rangers were claimed to be relaxed over the negotiations but hopeful a deal could b struck with Goldson free to discuss a pre-contract deal elsewhere.
