RANGERS ace Allan McGregor remains the best Scottish goalkeeper, insists Davie Provan.

And the former attacker reckons the veteran stopper would be between the sticks for Scotland when they play Ukraine in their World Cup semi-final play-off this summer had he not retired from international duty.

Hearts skipper Craig Gordon has been on impressive form for the past two seasons at Tynecastle.

And the former Hoops goalie has established himself as Steve Clarke's No.1 for the national team.

But despite Gordon maintaining his fine form over a consistent period now, Provan reckons McGregor is still the best Scottish keeper.

Reflecting on the crucial penalty save in the first leg against Red Star Belgrade, Provan said Go Radio's Football Show: "It was a horrible height for a goalkeeper but that is Allan McGregor, that is what he does.

"Because of his age, people automatically say he is over the hill, he is this, he is that.

"It is great that he can make a save like that, and prove that he still has the reflexes and the agility to make a save like that.

"If Allan McGregor hadn't retired for international football I would have Allan McGrergor in against Ukraine, I think he is the No.1."

Barry Ferguson agreed. He added: "It's all about proving he is the best.

"I still think he is the best goalkeeper not just at Rangers but in our game up here. He proved it last Thursday against Red Star, not just the penalty save, another three or four saves to keep Rangers in the game.

"Listen we have three top class goalkeepers in Scotland, Greegsy, Joe Hart and Craig Gordon, they could play a the highest level for me.

"Top class goalkeeper in Craig Gordon, Marsh it is good to see him back in the squad and Liam Kelly at Motherwell is doing well but Allan McGregor is a top class goalkeeper.

"I'm sure if the country called him and needed a hand, I'm sure he would do it.

"I know the reasons why he did retire he had back trouble down at Hull City, he got operated on, that is the reason why he gave up on international football."
