FORMER Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is under growing pressure at Aston Villa.

His side lost their opening day fixture away to Bournemouth, as they went down with a whimper on the south coast. 

Despite it being a clean slate at the start of the Premier League season, many have pointed to his poor win percentage overall, going back to last season as well.

And Graeme Souness admits the ex-Ibrox man is in a vulnerable position at Villa Park.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Simon Jordan pointed to Gerrard's record at the club, which is less than one win in every three games.

He commented:  "I don't worry for him because he's a big boy, he took on a big job.

"I do think that there's jeopardy for him this season. There's a decline in that side. Their performance against Bournemouth."

Souness chipped in: "That's 90 minutes, Simon."

The former Crystal Palace owner came back: "I think if you look back at last season. Look at the currency that he's trading on which is the last 12 or 15 games. They were abject against Bournemouth."

And Souness did conceded that Gerrard's summer spending will lead to additional pressure.

He said: "You become vulnerable when you spend big money. Will it work? I hope it does. I don't profess to know him. I think he's a good man. It's his second big job. The first one he had was a big job as well.

"He'll be fully aware of how the game works. He'll be fully aware of what he has to do and what he has to get right."
