Kris Boyd has saluted Allan McGregor as "top class" after the goalkeeper made his 500th appearance for Rangers.

The keeper - who was presented an award by John Greig pre-match at Ibrox - made the landmark appearance for his club against Dundee United.

McGregor is the first player to hit 500 games for the club since former manager and striker Ally McCoist.

While Boyd was complimentary of Malik Tillman's brace against United to earn Rangers the win - he insisted the focus was always on McGregor.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: "I think it is two good goals from Malik Tillman, he is someone who is doing well, no doubt about it.

"But I think the story yesterday was Allan McGregor, and rightly so - 500 games for Rangers Football Club is a fantastic achievement.

"To get there the way he has...as you say not having to do much yesterday but that pretty much sums up Allan McGregor over his Rangers career; there have been games where he hasn't had to do much but has made big saves at big moments and I think that's what separates him from the rest.

"Top class goalkeeper and he keeps himself in fantastic shape, you can see still going at 41 years old, it's unbelievable. Well done, congratulations because 500 games is no mean feat."

McGregor will be honoured with a testimonial match against Newcastle in July with a percentage of proceeds going to charities chosen by the keeper.

Michael Beale said: “This will be a very proud night for Allan and his family and an excellent, and important test for us.

“We will have an interesting pre-season, with this being the first game announced. There will be some top friendlies in there to help us get ready for the new season.”

Managing director Stewart Robertson said of McGregor: “Allan’s contribution, across two spells at the club, was recognised with his induction into the prestigious Rangers Hall of Fame, at the recent gala dinner in Edmiston House.

“Allan is a true Rangers great. I have no doubt our fans will savour the Newcastle United testimonial match.

“It’ll be an evening many thousands will be able to go to Ibrox to salute and applaud Allan’s remarkable service to Rangers.”
