Rangers could do a lot worse than to sign either Lawrence Shankland or Kevin van Veen this summer.

That's the viewpoint of ex-Gers star Kris Boyd.

The Ibrox hero believes Michael Beale will need to bring in at least two top strikers this summer, as he rebuilds his squad ahead of next season.

However, the pundit also reckons there would be no harm in drafting in a third frontman in the upcoming transfer window. 

And the ex-Kilmarnock hitman has backed either Hearts captain Shankland or Motherwell talisman van Veen to be the answer.

Both players have been in stunning form this term, and Boyd reckons they should be in the running for the Player of the Year vote at the end of the season.

Boyd insists there is a snobbery with Scottish football, but pointed out that neither he, Steven Naismith, Billy Dodds nor Nacho Novo were exactly classed as blockbuster signings for the Ibrox club when they signed.

He wrote in the Scottish Sun: "Running him (Kyogo) close, but not quite close enough, for my vote would be van Veen and Shankland. To score 24 and 25 goals respectively for teams outwith the Old Firm is no mean feat.

"I have a lot of time for both and I genuinely think Rangers could do worse than consider signing one of them this summer. Michael Beale will need to bring in two elite-level frontmen if he wants to get closer to Celtic.

"But I would not be against Van Veen, even at the age of 31, or Shankland being that third, backup goalscorer. At the very least they should be part of the conversation at Ibrox in the coming months.

"Proven scorers in the league are worth their weight in gold and both of these guys know exactly where the net is. For whatever reason, Rangers and Celtic have been quite snobbish recently when it comes to buying players who ply their trade in Scotland.

"In the past, Billy Dodds, Russell Latapy, Steven Thomson, Nacho Novo, and the exceptional pair of Claudio Caniggia and Steven Naismith arrived at Ibrox from rival top-flight clubs.

"Not for one minute am I comparing Van Veen and Shankland with that group of players. But none of those players — and I could also include myself in this — were regarded as blockbuster signings at the time.

"Yet we all weighed in with vital goals during our Rangers careers."
