Michael Beale spoke to the media after the 1-0 win over Real Betis in the Europa League. Here's everything that he had to say
Huge result?
Well done to the players. We had some big moments in the first half with Rabbi running away. When he ran through, you are thinking if you’re going to be talking about that chance after. We had another chance at the end of the first half between Abdallah and Kemar but we didn’t show enough belief in that with the ball. We spoke about that at half-time and we didn’t settle with the ball - which is recurring. We were much better second half and scoring off a set play was big for us because we won four contacts in a row. In tight games, these are some of the things that we need to do more.
Half-time message?
I asked them what they thought. It comes down to belief and going for it. We’ve been here too often and fallen short when the chances have been even. Ultimately, I think we deserved to win the game and I was under no illusions about the quality they possess. I asked them to step over the line and commit to the game. It’s just three points in the group and we’ve got two tough away games now. We’ll enough tonight but the focus is on Motherwell.
It’s some achievement to beat a top La Liga side…
We have had a couple of bangs on the head this season and we have heard it loud and clear from the outside. We have had two clean sheets since the international break and that is a real positive sign. But, nothing is done. It is just one performance. There was a lot that I’m happy with but there’s also things that we need to improve.

How is Tom Lawrence?
He wanted to continue so I’m hoping that it’s just cramp. The games are coming thick and fast now. Sam Lammers came on and made a good impact so we will wait and see. I’ll give you an update before the weekend.
Ben Davies' performance?
I’ve been delighted with Ben. We’ve had a couple of honest conversations during pre-season. He ended last season injured and he wasn’t ready to play ninety minutes until the international break. He’s worked really hard and he’s a very good player. His domestic record for Rangers is really good.
Another good performance from Jack Butland, is he showing that he’s a Rangers player?
You sit with every player and talk things out. He was taking over from a legend at the club and there was always going to be a lot of eyes on him. I’ve known Jack for years and he’s had an opportunity to play here to show his quality. It’s very early in his Rangers career and I’m delighted to get him on a free transfer.
Pleased with the reaction in the last week?
We need to back it up at the weekend. I don’t think we can come off each other just now. We came into the season and what we were seeing behind the scenes was really positive. But then results and performances haven’t really been in line with that. The first thing is showing passion and desire - but I think the quality will come over time, certainly with results and confidence. It’s too early for me to start giving the team praise. Let’s go again at the weekend.
Light in central midfield with injuries - pleased with how they performed?
The balance with John Ludstram sitting and Jose Cifuentes jumping to press with Tom was good. We’ve got Ryan Jack and I’m telling you that we have a heck of a player in Bailey Rice. He’s not 17 until the end of next month but when I introduce him to this madhouse and protecting him is important. But I’m telling you, he’s ready.
