Dujon Sterling spoke in the mixed zone after Rangers beat Real Betis. Here is what the defender had to say.
Thoughts on the game?
It was important to get the win and get off to a good start, especially in a tough competition. That was the main focus for us.
Did you play with more confidence in the second half?
I think first half we didn’t have the belief that we were good enough on the ball. When we spoke at half-time as a collective, we wanted to become ourselves and we had to trust each other and believe because we do it day in day out on the training pitch.
What did the manager say?
Just to have more belief on the ball. We were stopping them and doing well but on the ball we weren’t tidy and that was letting us down. Second half we were tidier on the ball, we got more opportunities and created more chances.
How big a win could that be in the group?
Just for our season in general and going into [Sunday]. We want to keep the momentum going.
What is the spirit in the dressing room like?
I think when you first lose, it is depressing and you are upset. But it is about how you bounce back as a team. We have stayed strong. There is noise outside and stuff but it is about what we belief inside and what we do day in day out to improve ourselves. That is what we are doing and hopefully our performances will match the results.
Are you building momentum now?
I think that is the main objective, to win all the home games coming up then it can lead us into a good run after the internationals.
Could this be the catalyst for the season?
Hopefully it sparks us to do well. We are still in for all the trophies this season and that is a positive we can look forward to.
How big a win is that for the manager?
I think it is good for him but we have got to keep going and get more wins and points on the board, and in the cup. In this competition, we want to get through to the next round.
You have to follow it up domestically?
Exactly. There is no point winning this game and thinking everything is good and then going into Sunday and losing.
What are your views on Motherwell?
That is our only focus at the minute. It is game by game and we have to get the result we want.
Has it been frustrating for you?
Obviously everyone wants to play minutes. I had a stop start pre-season as well. I was still working my way in last month. Hopefully now I am fully fit I can get more minutes. It is a team game and everyone is going to be needed throughout the season and is competing for a place. I just have to wait for my opportunity to come.
