The ball broke and Alex Gogic found himself in the right place at the right time. The next action, and perhaps the final result, seemed inevitable.
John Souttar had other ideas. As Gogic put his laces through the effort from inside the area, the Rangers defender threw his body on the line. It was a block that ultimately earned Rangers all three points on Saturday.
The chance for Gogic was not the only one that St Mirren spurned. On a day when a Cyriel Dessers strike proved the difference, boss Stephen Robinson was left to lament his luck and rue the finishing of his side in the final third. The Buddies had nothing to show for their efforts.
“The pitch wasn’t the best,” Gogic said when asked about his chance five minutes from the end of an encounter that was played in difficult underfoot and overhead conditions. “So I was just waiting to see where the ball was going to drop as it bobbled and bounced.
“I tried to smash it and thought it was going in. But to be fair it was a great block. It was great defending from him.
“I felt we played great but we’re frustrated because we have played well against them so many times and got nothing. We get a ‘well done’ but we lose so it means nothing.

“I’d rather play badly and win. But we at least showed we can play against the big teams with no fear.
“It’s definitely coming and I believe it will come. The strikers are working hard and just sometimes it doesn’t happen. But I feel when the gates open the goals will flood in.
“Sometimes we maybe need more composure while other times we just haven’t had the luck you need. We just need the ball to bounce at the right place at the right time.
“We did [knock Rangers off their stride]. But we want to get that win. Or at least a point.”
