The bafflement among the packed Ibrox crowd was audible for all to hear as it was announced VAR was checking what looked like a Rangers opener against Hibernian.

James Tavernier missed a spot kick after a good save by David Marshall. However, Scott Wright followed it up nicely and tapped home the rebound.

The raucous home crowd thought it was the opening goal against Hibs, as they cheered on their heroes.

However, as it did when awarding the penalty, VAR was involved in the aftermath of the goal.

It's understood the goal was ruled out with the officials judging Wright to have been encroaching on the box as Tavernier took the penalty. Still images appeared to show that both sets of players were encroaching on the box as Tavernier stepped up.

So, what are the rules on encroachment for spot kicks? The English FA have this handy guidance on their website.

Outcome of the penalty kick

Encroachment by attacking player: Goal - Penalty is retaken. No goal - Indirect free kick.

Encroachment by defending player: Goal - Goal. No goal - Penalty is retaken.

Encroachment by defending and attacking player: Goal - Penalty is retaken. No goal - Penalty is retaken.

Hibs' official X account was less than enamoured by the decision to award the penalty in the first place.

Their post read: "Penalty to Rangers. Who had 20 minutes?"

Meanwhile, Celtic's statement conveying their disappointment that Brendan Rodgers had been served with a Scottish FA ban gave Kris Boyd a 'good laugh' this midweek.

The Rangers hero insists the champions are kidding themselves on - branding the SFA's decision to suspend one of the matches as part of the two-game ban as 'weak'.

Rodgers attended a hearing at Hampden Park in front of the SFA's disciplinary panel on Thursday afternoon.
