A pair of PSV Eindhoven fans have been given suspended prison sentences for letting off fireworks outside Rangers' team hotel.

Rangers were drawn against the Dutch side in the 2022 Champions League play-offs and the match was delicately poised after a 2-2 draw at Ibrox in the first leg.

And two PSV fans decided to disrupt preparations for the vital tie by setting off fireworks directly outside the hotel in Eindhoven that Rangers were staying in at 2am.

The unnamed duo - who were only described as a 26-year-old man from Heezen and a 25-year-old man from North Holland - were immediately arrested and were finally up in court in Den Bosch this week.

Under Dutch law, they faced up to nine months in jail. The public prosecutor said: "The reason this was so serious is because of the type of fireworks they lit - single shot tubes that were connected together - very dangerous.

"These improvised fireworks can go in any direction. You light it, run away and don't know what's going to happen. This really does not fall into the category of just mischief."

The pair were both handed suspended prison sentences of three months and handed 120 hours of community service.

The judge commented: "Not only was this act very dangerous, but it was also very unsportsmanlike too."

And the fans' attempts to disrupt Rangers' preparations failed miserably - the Ibrox side won 1-0 with a goal from Antonio Colak to qualify for the group stages.

Meanwhile, it's that time of the year when fans of Scottish football are keen to discover the unknown quantity of the post-split Premiership fixtures.

There is just one matchday left in the regular season in Scotland's top flight, with Dundee vs Rangers also due to take place this week.
