Former Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst could be set to take charge of Besiktas next season just a few months after he turned down the chance to manage in Turkey.

The Dutch coach was sacked by Rangers in November 2022, but has refused offers from other clubs to return to management since then.

He looked certain to take charge at Istanbul side Besiktas in January, but it was widely reported he turned it down because NAC Breda would not allow his former assistant Jean-Paul van Gastel to leave as manager to go with van Bronckhorst to Istanbul.

Besiktas appointed former Portugal, Greece and Poland manager Fernando Santos instead, but he lasted just three months before they pulled the plug at the weekend after a draw at home to Samsunspor.

And van Brockhorst is reportedly Besiktas' No.1 target for next season after a disappointing campaign where they are languishing in fourth place a distant 37 points behind leaders Fenerbahce.

However, he will have to be persuaded after revealing last month that he may not return to club management.

Van Bronckhorst said: "When a club is interested you have to delve into everything - the state of the club, their position and the players of course.

"And ultimately, you arrive at a total picture of a club where you get the feeling that you want to get involved in or not. The latter was the case with me.

"For me, it was not the time to join and I am not looking for a club either.

"I am very happy with how life is now, although if there is a nice club, I always want to listen to what they have to say."
