Gary McAllister insists the league title is true the barometer for success at Rangers.

The former Ibrox No2 - assistant to Steven Gerrard - reckons there are similarities between Philippe Clement's task at Rangers and that which he faced.

And McAllister is certain the league title will be the number one priority for Rangers despite the chance for a Viaplay Cup and Scottish Cup double.

Rangers currently sit three points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership with five matches left - meaning a treble is still a possibility for Clement and his players.

For McAllister, the league has to be the priority - even if he admits a cup double would be a sign of progress for Rangers.

"I think the barometer is always the league," McAllister told Sky Sports. "Winning trophies is really difficult, even for the big clubs, so when you win a trophy it's always a good thing.

"I think the big clubs are always judged on league titles. There is something about winning the league, it's just up another level."

Quizzed on whether a cup double would still be evidence enough of Clement going in the right direction at Rangers, McAllister added: "I think so but deep down, everybody behind the scenes from the players, to the management staff and the owners will still be chasing winning the league.

"It brings back memories of when Steven (Gerrard) and our team came up from south of the border.

"We were quite a bit behind Celtic and were given a bit of time, but winning that league was very key. We didn't have great success in the cups but getting that title was the big thing."
