Allt McCoist was left stunned after being asked whether he would "secretly cheer Celtic on" if a result helped Rangers.
The Ibrox legend faced the question from Jeff Stelling after discussing rival supporters needing wins from rivals to benefit their own season.
Arsenal, for example, will be looking for a favour from Tottenham against Manchester City to boost their title hopes.
On talkSPORT, Stelling asked McCoist whether he would cheer on Celtic if a win actually helped Rangers.
The Ibrox hero was aghast at the suggestion as he insisted that would be "taking it to the extreme".
Instead, popular co-commentator McCoist stated he would only ever "grudgingly accept their victory".
Responding the the on-air poser, McCoist said: "Did you ask me if I would cheer them on? I don't know if I would cheer them on.
"I'd grudgingly accept their victory. But I don't know if I would secretly cheer them on.
"That's perhaps taking it to the extreme."

It comes after McCoist recently admitted he would never want Celtic to fall out of the top flight in Scottish football.
The pundit was questioned on whether he would enjoy seeing Celtic drop down the divisions - as Rangers did - but he rejected the scenario as he would miss the derby matches too much.
He said: "No. The bottom three would suit me fine.
"The games against each other are what we all generally live for. I was at the 3-3 game (at Ibrox), tremendous.
"When Rangers went down to the third division, I don't care what anybody says, you missed us. You missed the Old Firm games, because there's something special about them.
"So I understand that - I don't think Liverpool fans would want Everton to be successful, but they love the games against them, and they would miss the games against them."
