Robbie Fraser is in talks with Rangers over a new two-year contract that will give him a crack at Philippe Clement's first team squad next season.

The left-back made his debut for his boyhood heroes in the Premiership fixture at home to Dundee earlier this month. He was then handed his first start as Clement's side rounded off their league campaign with a 3-3 draw against Hearts at Tynecastle.

The Rangers Review understands Fraser, who is out of contract this summer, is now poised to extend his stay once again as Clement assembles his squad for next term. Clement has already added Brazilian left-back Jefte to his ranks this summer as Borna Barisic prepares to complete a switch to Trabzonspor. Ridvan Yilmaz was the subject of interest from his homeland in January and could attract an approach over the close season.

Clement has spoken of the need to promote more young players through the ranks at Ibrox in the coming years. Ross McCausland was a mainstay of the squad during Clement's first months at the helm, while the likes of Cole McKinnon and Johnly Yfeko have also been part of the Belgian's group.

"The manager said that he believed in me, he liked what he saw of me and he told me go on and just be positive and do what I've been doing," Fraser told Rangers TV after the 5-2 victory over Tony Docherty's side. "I felt like I did that, but, of course, there are moments that I can look at in my game and hope to improve.

"I was pleased [with my performance], I felt good when I was on the ball, communicating with the backline, I felt good but again there are always moments to get better."

The arrival of Jefte was the first move of the window for Clement but the full-back will not be joined in Glasgow by Jose Cordoba. Rangers had been keen on a deal for the Panamanian but the Rangers Review revealed on Wednesday morning that they had pulled out of the race for his signature.

Clement has now turned his attentions to other targets as he gears up for a significant overhaul of the squad in the coming weeks. The 50-year-old addressed the scale of his task over the summer break after seeing his side end the campaign with a defeat to Celtic in the Scottish Cup final on Saturday.

“It is a massive challenge because there is not much time,” Clement said at Hampden. “That is the reality. You have qualifying games for Champions League in August, you have five league game also so that is nine games in four weeks. You need to rebuild the squad. We have several players out of contract who will leave the building so you need to replace them without money coming inside.

"That is also one thing. We need to be really inventive in our transfers and doing the smart things. It is going to be really challenging but we are busy already with that for months within the club.

"You see already that we bring in Jefte yesterday, who is a young player, talented. They will need also their time to adapt. How long? That is always difficult to predict. Some players they adapt really fast, some players need more time but we are working hard to get more quality in the building.”
