Todd Cantwell wasn't satisfied with his time at Rangers last season.

That's the opinion of Blackburn Rovers manager John Eustace, who signed the midfielder on a three-year contract prior to Deadline Day.

After submitting a transfer request this summer, Cantwell backtracked and claimed that he never told Rangers manager Philippe Clement he wanted to leave.

Eustace believes Cantwell sought a change because he felt he wasn't given enough chances to showcase his skills in Scotland.

While the 26-year-old is not yet ready to start for Blackburn, who host Bristol City at Ewood Park on Saturday, Eustace noted that Cantwell's fitness is improving, and he has shown glimpses of his potential on the pitch after missing out on full pre-season training at Ibrox after being made to work away from the first team.

Although, a cameo from the substitute's bench hasn't been ruled out.

"Todd’s coming in with a point to prove," Eustace commented. "Todd is a top-class player at this level. He's been at Rangers for the last few seasons and last year probably wasn't where he wants to be. We will give him the opportunity to showcase himself.

"He's a top player at this level and I know he's very determined to hit the heights he has in the past. He has lots of experience, he's been promoted three times out of the league so we're very excited that he's here.

"Todd isn't ready to start. He's not had a pre-season, he is behind a lot of the lads. He's shown glimpses in training that he's getting fitter and we have to manage him properly. We will do that over the next two or three weeks. He could be involved from the bench, we'll have to wait and see."
