ALLAN McGREGOR: Produced a point-blank save to deny Brandt shortly after Rangers took the lead. No chance with Bellingham’s equaliser or Malen’s goal in the first half. Had to tip away a powerful Malen drive just seconds after Rangers came close to adding a second and saved well to deny a Meunier header in first-half stoppage time. Good near-post save to deny Wolf. 8
JAMES TAVERNIER: A proper captain’s performance tonight. Whipped in a perfectly weighted free-kick onto the head of Morelos after two minutes but the Colombian nodded over. Gave the ball away cheaply five minutes later but made amends to regain possession.
Showed tremendous composure to slot home the penalty sending Kobel the wrong way just like last week. Could’ve closed down Brandt better before the ball made its way to Malen to make it 2-1 Dortmund. Sent Ibrox into raptures when he got on the end of Bassey’s cross to equalise from close range. Had a penalty claim in the second half waved away following a slight push in the back by Bellingham. 9
CONNOR GOLDSON: Gifted Dortmund their equaliser on the night when Malen’s ball struck off the centre back into the path of Bellingham who slotted home. He and Bassey looked ragged at times as Dortmund laid siege on the Rangers goal. Great long ball to Morelos who got in behind the Dortmund defence and forced a save out of Kobel at the start of the second half. Looked much more comfortable in the back five and Dortmund found it tough going as a result. 7
CALVIN BASSEY: A ropey first half display from the 22-year-old, he and Goldson struggled to deal with Dortmund’s attacking play at times. Good tackle on Hazard on the edge of the penalty area at the start of the second half. Outstanding tenacity and strength to fire over the cross for Tavernier to fire in for 2-2. Caused Dortmund problems with his forward running in the second period. 8
BORNA BARISIC: The Croatian started well enough, he produced a great sliding challenge to break up a Dortmund attack on 13 minutes. Took a sore one from Meunier in an accidental clash but was able to continue after receiving treatment. Struggled from then on, was guilty of poor distribution at times, giving possession away cheaply. Slipped just moments before the cross was whipped in which resulted in Malen firing Dortmund ahead on the night. Replaced by Balogun at half time. 5
RYAN JACK: Found it tough going in the first half as Dortmund pinned Rangers back. Could’ve done better with an angled strike from a corner but fired over the bar. Grew into the game as the match wore on. Worked his socks off. 8
JOHN LUNDSTRAM: Cautioned for bringing down Hazard when Dortmund were looking to counter, a proper ‘taking one for the team’ from the former Sheffield United man. Unfortunate touch that saw the ball fall to Malen to slot home just before the break. Moved back to form a back five in the second half and added a stability that was missing in the first half. 8
SCOTT ARFIELD: Great anticipation and desire to win a 50/50 in the middle of the park midway through the first half. Only he knows why he didn’t square to Kent when through on goal, instead he elected to shoot and his effort was parried by Kobel with the rebound from Morelos blocked on the line. Worked hard and was replaced by Kamara on 69 minutes. 6
JOE ARIBO: Powered four defensive headers away from Dortmund corners as the Germans pegged Rangers back in the first half. Played a perfect through ball to Arfield but the 33-year-old couldn’t take advantage. Worked tirelessly in the midfield three following the formation change. 7
RYAN KENT: Dortmund doubled up on the Rangers man given his scintillating performance last Thursday. Was fouled by Meunier twice in as many minutes in the first half, the Belgian fortunate not to be cautioned. Won the penalty with quick feet to nip past Brandt who brought him down with an outstretched leg.
Tapped into an empty net for 3-2 after being laid off by Morelos before it was bizarrely ruled out by the referee after a VAR check. Found himself in on goal on 74 minutes but he overhit the ball forward which allowed Schulz to come across and clear. Like Morelos, the Dortmund defence will be delighted to see the back of him after another brilliant display. 8
ALFREDO MORELOS: Another brilliant centre forward performance from El Bufalo. Terrorised Hummels throughout who will be having nightmares. Started brightly and won the first free-kick of the night after two minutes in a promising position, connected with the resultant Tavernier delivery but he couldn’t keep his header down. Saw a close-range strike blocked on the line. Poor ball in first-half stoppage time that resulted in a Dortmund chance that ended with Meunier headed towards goal that was saved.
Forced a couple of saves out of Kobel in the second half and showed good movement for the equalising goal that Tavernier dispatched. His hold-up play was terrific and everything seemed to stick to him. Unselfishly laid the ball on a plate for Kent to tap into an empty net for 3-2 after nipping the ball off Can that was ridiculously ruled out by the referee after checking VAR. 9
Substitutes
LEON BALOGUN: Replaced Barisic at the break and moved inside to partner Goldson and Lundstram as Rangers moved to a 5-3-2. Closed down by Reus on 49 minutes, luckily nothing came off it. Slid in on Reus on 63 minutes as the German tried to round McGregor but his effort went wide and no VAR check was carried out. Tremendous tackle on Brandt who was looking to cut inside and fire on goal. 7
GLEN KAMARA: Replaced Arfield midway through the second half for fresh legs in the Rangers engine room. 6
