PRE-SEASON is over, the signings are here, the squad has a freshness and bar the shouting, it’s time to get down to some proper business.
Rangers head to Livingston on Saturday morning with a new look squad but still with a familiar look and that experience will be vital.
I asked Gio the burning question of who would be Rangers' number one this season. He smiled wryly and said no decision has been made. I suspect he knows exactly who it will be and no matter whom he chooses, both have that experience as number one.
Then you look at the spine of the Rangers team after the goalkeeper and you have Connor Goldson, James Sands, James Tavernier, Borna Barisic, John Lundstram, Ryan Jack and Ryan Kent all with experience of the league and what to expect. But then you have the potential flair of Tom Lawrence, Antonio Colak and Rabbi Matondo to spice things up.
It’ll be a difficult match, Livingston are well drilled with a very good coach and they’ve caused us problems before. So right from word go we have to be ready and we have to get it right because now there is no margin for error. It’s all action now, league, Champions League qualifiers, repeat, repeat.
With the World Cup schedule coming thick and fast, Rangers fixtures will be packed from the start. It’s the old adage but it’s as relevant as ever that we have to start well and be ready from word go.
There is enough of a balance to ensure that happens and whilst we may arguably be weaker with the departures of Leon Balogun, Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey, the new boys will add a fresh dynamic that will hopefully see us through before we become a better team in the long term.
I believe in time that our new signings will contribute and add freshness we have been missing but we will need to be patient and let them settle. If John Lundstram has taught us anything...
On paper our business has been good. Potential income in sales of well over £30m, with around £12m spent, is very sensible business and that natural progression in the team has happened. But leagues aren’t won on paper. At Rangers you could be a league winner or a cup final goalscorer and still you aren’t deemed good enough so the demands are high.
That’s something which takes time to adjust too. Rangers is an unforgiving place, every one of us know that and appreciate it. Some big names have struggled and many have failed.
I am slightly concerned that Ben Davies and Ridvan Yilmaz have come in a bit later so will be playing catch up, especially with both being vital players who should start in the team. Our other signings, with the exception of Malik Tillman, should be fairly settled and have had most of the pre-season so that is a positive.
I’ve already seen enough of Matondo, Lawrence, John Souttar and Colak to be happy enough. We saw a cameo glimpse of Tillman to see his promise so aside of the aforementioned late arrivals I believe we are in decent shape.
Factor in the return of Alfredo Morelos to light training and Gio’s admission he is close to signing a new contract then that remains a huge factor. A lean, focused and confident Morelos backed by new attacking support is an exciting thought.
Of course, there is anxiety because it’s your team and you want to start fast and quickly so we have that desire to put markers down but I’ll journey back to something I said many times last season.
It’s about winning, it’s about the three points and it’s vital we get off to a good start, gaining momentum for Belgium, good feelings across the fan base and hopefully early positive experiences for the squad.
So it’s off we go again on another season's journey. Let’s hope this season ends the way we all want it to. I believe it can but doesn’t every fan of every club?
The proof will be what happens on the pitch and the truth is never far away.
Gio has a remit to deliver silverware, the biggest domestic one must return to Ibrox. There is no room for failure. On Saturday we must be ready
