Allan McGregor: Was called into action to make a sharp save on 20 minutes when Simeone was slipped through. The veteran stood tall until the last minute and used his leg to divert the shot just past the post. Saved Zielinski’s first penalty brilliantly and then did the remarkable by saving the retake. A third penalty proved a bridge too far but the 40-year-old came tantalising close to saving Politano's fiercely struck effort. No chance with any of the goals. 9

James Tavernier: Sketchy first half, losing possession and looking a touch off the pace after injury disruption. Took one for the team when Kvaratskhelia looked to power through in goal and was booked for his troubles. The captain is still operating below his usual level and looked a touch rusty but there were also promising signs. Subbed with 10 minutes to go. 6

Borna Barisic: Positive, full of running. Barisic has responded well to the challenge of Ridvan Yilmaz and looks back to his best. Showed a lack of awareness when the hard-working Politano nipped in to steal the ball but another really solid showing. Gave away a penalty with a handball on 67 minutes. 7

James Sands: The young American was aggressive defensively, and it was to prove a problem in the end. Made an outstanding recovery tackle on the dangerous Kvaratskhelia after the Georgian slalomed past Goldson with an explosive turn of pace. Sent off after the break when he received a second yellow card for bringing down Simeone in the box after a ball over the top caused chaos. This apeared unfortunate to the naked eye. 7

Connor Goldson: Looked focused and switched on to his defensive duties. Golson has been on the end of some serious stick in recent weeks but he certainly responded in the best possible way. It was a titanic performance on the deck and in the air, showing leadership and poise. Much improved.

John Lundstram: Got through a power of work in the engine room with numerous interceptions and blocks. Booked for an innocuous foul on Ruiz. Grafted and harried but didn't offer much going forward. 6

Ryan Jack: While he still looks a yard off his best shape physically and a touch stiff, there’s no doubting his heart for the battle or composure in the heat of it. Used the ball intelligently and opened up the game with some nice touches. He’s still a driving force, even if not quite the powerhouse of old. Subbed after 70 minutes.

Steven Davis: Neat and tidy as usual. Still plays with his head up and doesn’t look his age. Another performance where he left everything on the pitch. 7

Scott Arfield: His superb 25-yard strike was brilliantly saved by Meret. Came close just after half time when he fired wide after a knockdown. Worked his backside off for the team and always looked to get forward and cause danger. 7

Ryan Kent: Ghosted past Politano and Di Lorenzo like they weren’t there. Possibly should have had a penalty when felled in the box after another mazy run. Was very dangerous and looked in the mood during the first half but didn't offer much in the second, especially after the red card when defending became the priority. Workrate was much improved on recent showings.

Alfredo Morelos: An excellent perfromance that showed how much he's been missed. Almost marked his return to the side in style with a header that flashed wide after 60 seconds. Brilliant link-up and a sure touch throughout as well as the usual insistent pressing. Booked for a late challenge on Meret in the first half after following up on a Tavernier knockdown. Deserves to remain in the team going forward on such nights, when he plays, Rangers are a different animal. 8

Substitutes

Leon King: Slotted in at centre-back after Sands’ red card. Misplaced a couple of passes but was solid enough.

Antonio Colak: The big striker arrived into the fray with 20 minutes to go. 5

Rabbi Matondo: Added pace down the right flank when he arrived for Arfield. There's something there, Giovanni van Bronckhorst just has to find it.

Glen Kamara: Late substitute appearance for the Finn. Gave the ball away to allow the third with slack play. 2

Malik Tillman: Arrived late on. 2
