Allan McGregor: Rangers man of the match by a country mile and there can now be no doubt who Rangers number 1 is for the remainder of the season. Made a good early save down to his right but had no chance moments later when Trent Alexander-Arnold curled a 25-yard free-kick into the postage stamp. Was called into action to make a stunning save from Salah after 14 minutes. Made a superb, point-blank save from Nunez on 33 minutes after the striker found himself one vs one in the box. Made another stop from the same player just before the break. Saved his best for a pinpoint, venomous shot from Jota in the 58th minute that he somehow flicked over the bar. 9

James Tavernier: Struggled to play his usual game amid Liverpool's superhuman capacity to employ their manager's pressing strategy. Gave the ball away sloppily on more than one occasion. Perhaps understandably, he looked spooked by the quality coming at him in wave after wave. Didn't have much help from Tillman in front of him to be fair on the captain. 5

Borna Barisic: Tucked in well at the back post throughout. Had the difficult task of shackling Salah and the Croat gave an impossible job a decent shot. Worked hard and gave his all. 6

Ben Davies: Made the challenge that led to the opening goal. Still rusty after injury but showed enough to suggest he will be important as the season goes on. Had his hands full throughout against a formidable attacking outfit. Subbed after 81 minutes. 6

Connor Goldson: Solid in the air and composed on the ball, he was Rangers' best defender, cutting out too many dangerous situations to count. He can hold his head high on a difficult night. 7

Leon King: Made a fantastic recovery tackle on Nunez after the Uruguayan attacker ghosted past the 18-year-old. A great challenge on Tsimikas early in the second half prevented a very difficult situation from unfolding. Made an error when he brought down Luiz Diaz to give Liverpool their penalty. While it was a difficult night for the youngster, he will have learned much from the stern examination posed. 6

Steven Davies: Struggled in a two-man midfield with Lundstram. Looked harried and gave the ball away with unusual regularity. A poor night for the veteran. Subbed. 5

John Lundstram: Toiled without much joy and was booked for a cynical first-half challenge on Jota. Was poor by his own high standards and was guilty of many unforced errors. Having a difficult spell of form. 5

Malik Tillman: A surprise selection for this game as a player who has looked uncomfortable when tested defensively. He didn't exactly prove the doubters wrong. Offered little without being a disaster. Always looks a yard short waking up to his correct defensive positioning. Will have done his development the world of good but that won't be of consolation to fans. Subbed. 4

Ryan Kent: Was the one Rangers player who showed a bit of quality with a few flicks and tricks - although nothing amounted to much. A gorgeous turn got him free from Henderson before being brought down by Alexander-Arnold won Rangers a dangerous free-kick on a rare attack. Subbed with 10 minutes to go. 5

Alfredo Morelos: Link-up play was sharp and used his power and backside to ensure he wasn't robbed. Ploughed a very lonely furrow though and didn't get much opportunity to show what he can do as Rangers struggled to make any attacking impact against a team on a totally different level. Subbed. 5

Substitutes

Fashion Sakala: Entered with 20 minutes to go. 2

Ryan Jack: Added composure and experience to the midfield. 4

Antonio Colak: Was as isolated as Morelos had been. Forced a great save from Allison after the ball fell to the Croat after a corner. 3

Glen Kamara: Late sub. 1

Rabbi Matondo: Nearly scored after an excellent break but was foiled by brilliant defending from Tsimikas. 3
