Allan McGregor: No chance with both Firmino goals. Gave the ball away from a kick out that led to Nunez curling the ball past the 40-year-old into the far corner. Good stop from Salah on 70 minutes but may have done better when the Egyptian toe-poked the ball past him for goal number four shortly after. Nowhere near Salah’s second or his hat-trick as he ran riot. Saved from Jota but Elliot followed up for goal number seven. 4
James Tavernier: Won the ball that set up the move for Arfield’s opening goal but was at fault for Liverpool’s equaliser. The skipper gave the ball away cheaply that led to a corner and from the resultant set piece Firmino was allowed to nod the ball home at the near post with ease. Gave the ball away just seconds later that led to another Liverpool break but fortunately Goldson was able to recover. All over the place in the second half like the majority of his teammates. 3
Connor Goldson: Took a sore one off Nunez ten minutes in but battled on until he was forced off near the break after pulling up while stretching for a ball. Before that he was solid defensively and was decent in possession with the trademark diagonals in operation as Rangers looked to go long. The sight of him on crutches was a worrying one, particularly given the defence looked so fragile without his presence. 7
Ben Davies: Great pinged ball forward to Kent early on. Well timed challenge on Nunez on 22 minutes as Liverpool pushed for an equaliser. Composed and commanding start from the former Liverpool man and stood up relatively well throughout although was at fault for Liverpool’s fifth when he gave the ball away cheaply that led to Salah curling past McGregor. 5
Borna Barisic: Good block to deny an Elliot shot on goal at the start of the second half but never covered himself in glory for Firmino’s second of the night when he dived in unnecessarily on the halfway line that allowed Gomez to stride forward and unleash the ball into the Brazilian’s path. Brushed off the ball too easily by Salah who slotted home goal number four on 75 minutes and was nowhere near him as he curled in his hat-trick shortly after. 4
Ryan Jack: Terrific crunching but fair challenge to win the ball off Nunez in the opening stages that set the tone. His assist for Arfield’s opener was perfectly weighted. Teasing ball across towards Kent on 33 minutes that forced Gomez into conceding a corner. Hobbled off injured on 58 minutes with what looks like another calf injury. Replaced by Davis.5
John Lundstram: Brilliant diagonal pass into Sakala to force a save, albeit a comfortable one out of Alisson. The Scouser started in commanding fashion, winning second balls and dictating play. Terrific sliding challenge on Nunez on the by-line as Liverpool countered in the opening stages of the second half but was simply blown away as the Reds destroyed Rangers. 5
Scott Arfield: Started in the No.10 role in place of Malik Tillman and repaid the manager with Rangers’ first Champions League goal in 12 years and what a goal it was too. He picked the ball up from Jack’s sublime pass in between Konate and Gomez before firing past Alisson. Could’ve had a double but saw an effort blocked after great work from Sakala. Faded badly in the second half. 5
Fashion Sakala: Rightly started on the right given his recent showings and forced Alisson into an early save when he cut inside but his shot lacked any real power. Gave the ball cheaply midway through the first half which ended in a shot from Carvalho but fortunately, it whistled wide. Caught under the ball for the Liverpool corner that resulted in Firmino’s near post header and looked out his depth at times but roasted Tsimikas to set up a glorious chance for Arfield close to the break. Battled hard in the second half before being replaced by Matondo.6
Ryan Kent: Curled a shot over from the edge of the area in what was a positive opening five minutes. Was causing Gomez problems in the first half with his trickery but was anonymous in the second half as Rangers struggled to maintain the tempo. 4
Antonio Colak: Preferred over Alfredo Morelos who lead the line at Anfield last week. Almost capitalised on a mix-up in the Liverpool defence 20 minutes in but just lacked composure. Guilty of giving away possession at times and struggled with any aerial ball sent his way. Poor cross aimed for Kent as Rangers hit Liverpool on the counter. Replaced by Morelos on 76 minutes but it was far too late. 4
Substitutes
Leon King: Replaced the injured Goldson a minute before half time. Guilty of ball-watching for Liverpool’s second as Firmino ghosted in behind him to slot past McGregor. A harsh lesson as the Merseyside side ran amok in the second half. 3
Steven Davis: Replaced the injured Jack just before the hour mark. 2
Scott Wright: Replaced Kent. 1
Alfredo Morelos: Replaced Colak. 2
Rabbi Matondo: Replaced Sakala. 1
