It would’nt have been a surprise to see Alfredo Morelos hooked at half time in Monday’s Old Firm derby given a largely abject first-half showing.

The Colombian was guilty of giving the ball away cheaply to Daizen Maeda which culminated in the Japanese opening the scoring and then proceeded to squander two glorious headed chances.

However, his performance in the second half was much improved before he was substituted for Scott Wright.

The swagger and bullishness appeared to be back as Rangers rallied and got their noses in front. The sight of him conducting the Ibrox crowd à la Graham Roberts and his nutmeg of Maeda was evidence he looked revitalised and it was noted by Ibrox boss Michael Beale who touched on his impact in his post-match press conference.

He said: “I asked the three forwards to go and cause some disruption and I felt in the second half Alfredo started winning more of the duels against the centre-halves and that gave Sakala and Ryan more room.

“I thought the front three in the main did their job today.”

Beale’s assessment is spot on. Morelos won just one of his nine duels in the first half and five of eight in the second.

He was a big reason why the Light Blues looked on course to reignite the title race until Kyogo’s late equaliser.

Despite his improved second-half display, it’s fair to say he has some way to go to endear himself to the Rangers support with many hoping his time in Govan will be coming to an end this month.

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has been scathing in his assessment of Morelos of late and wasn't impressed by his showing against Celtic when he told Sky Sports: "There is no doubt for me that his time is up at Rangers.

"In the past few weeks, Morelos has played due to a lack of options for Rangers. Obviously with Roofe and Colak being injured.

"He is not the same player that he was for whatever reason. He might have his eyes on a move elsewhere."

Despite Boyd's comments, there is an argument he still adds value to this Rangers team and simply put there is nobody in the first-team squad capable of leading the line quite like El Bufalo when he's on song.

It's whether he is capable of delivering on a consistent basis from here on in that is up for debate.

Antonio Colak and Kemar Roofe were a welcome sight on the bench on Monday and will likely play important roles in the weeks and months ahead.

But unless the club are able to attract someone that can fulfil the role Morelos can then the benefit of retaining him until the summer surely outweighs offloading him in the transfer window.

Despite the likely prospect of losing out on a potentially lucrative transfer fee, Rangers have got bang for their buck and then some for the £1 million shelled out for his services five-and-a-half years ago. Should a club bid a similar amount to entice him away from Glasgow with just six months of his contract remaining, as enticing as that may be, would it be worth it? I'm not so sure it would.

He certainly has more to give this Rangers team and, under Beale’s guidance, is someone who could, realistically, enjoy a fruitful final few months in a blue jersey.

As he walked off the pitch on Monday, he received rapturous applause from the majority inside Ibrox for his efforts. He is still a key component of this squad and someone Beale clearly trusts.

While not deserving of a new contract, Morelos can still be of use until the season’s end.
