Rangers' midfield overhaul is already shaping up to be dramatic but once in place is such flux still needed elsewhere in the squad?

The perceived wisdom remains yes but given the consistency of results of late, one is entitled to wonder.

The arrival of Todd Cantwell is expected to be supplemented with Belgian youngster Nicolas Raskin in the days ahead. Winger Morgan Whittaker remains on the radar although Swansea are playing hardball over a fee.

If Ross Wilson can deliver the trio then a Rangers revolution under the impressive Michael Beale will truly have truly started.

Many looked at the squad as the summer window slammed shut and said Rangers were two players from looking very solid indeed - a wide player to make the right wing his own in the way Ryan Kent has bossed the left and a midfielder able to go box to box. The Rangers Insider, along with many fans, made this point consistently and it's proven an astute, if obvious, assessment.

Didn't Giovanni van Bronckhorst? We may never know.

The last manager has since lost his job but at the very least, you get the sense that the new one has no intention of fading quietly with the same issues plaguing him.

Beale has been nothing short of brilliant since arriving from QPR.  Unbeaten throughout and unlucky not to defeat Celtic in a game they largely controlled, if he intends to continue in this vein, he knows what he needs more than anyone.

In Cantwell, he will sign a skilful creative with energy and enthusiasm to spare that three seasons ago was tipped for a £30m move to the Premier League elite. In Raskin, a technically gifted deep-lying creator who can snuff out attacks and restart them with a brisk verticality to his passing. Complete both deals and all of a sudden the ponderous, creaking midfield of Rangers has a sleek new engine. The old stagers, over-encumbered with work and responsibility can breathe once again - a change of mindset more than anything else - that will allow the likes of Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack the space to concentrate on fitness and making big impacts when they do play.

And you sense Raskin and Cantwell won't be the only additions. The summer will see a further move towards youth and energy to create a backbone that will serve Rangers for years to come.

Some suggest, with some justification, that similar will be needed in other areas of the team.

A new goalkeeper looks a certainty but the back four is very strong when everyone is fit and needs little surgery. Securing Kent to a new contract and signing Whittaker should leave the creative attacking slots looking solid given Ianis Hagi and Tom Lawrence will also return and offer serious competition.

Money needs to be set aside for Malik Tillman as it's understood that's a deal Beale wants to get over the line and make permanent when the time is right. Further forward, a striker to replace the departing Alfredo Morelos will be signed but Antonio Colak's return will help ease any sense of desperation surrounding that.

So, a keeper, a further midfielder, a striker, cementing Tillman and like-for-like swaps should players leave looks to be the order of the day come the summer. It's not necessarily the massive overhaul many felt was needed only a matter of weeks ago. Time will tell if it's a notion that holds, or folds in the weeks ahead.
