The Rangers six that can supplement Beale's huge transfer influx

While it's dangerous to ever talk about Rangers fans and consensus, close observers seem to be largely agreed that four of the current team should act as the foundation stones of a summer rebuild.

James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Todd Cantwell and Nico Raskin stand out as the players with the chops to survive what has been a rancid, trophyless season.

But given stats website Transfermarkt has 33 senior players on the club's books it's simply not realistic that 29 players will depart for pastures new.

Some of the current squad will thrive with different players around them while others will remain because they can't be moved on but the more that Michael Beale and his coaching staff can get a turn out of, the better the odds success will arrive.

Here are six players who could yet contribute to next season's squad.

Robby McCrorie

The time has now arrived for the keeper to emerge from the shadows as a more significant figure at Ibrox. His season has been blighted by injury but he's already impressed Beale during Steven Gerrard's tenure when he performed brilliantly against Alashkert and Celtic after Covid wiped out the more experienced keepers. If, as expected, Jack Butland arrives on a free transfer, McCrorie will be back up but you never know when his chance will arrive. His teammate Allan McGregor only got game time when French internationalist Lionel Letizi was suddenly injured, a lucky turn of events yes, but he was ready to make an impact. McCrorie will have to be similarly focused.

John Souttar

Injury has wiped out his season but Souttar is an established Premiership defender and Scotland international with plenty to offer if he can steer clear of injury. Capable of both playing out from the back and defending robustly, there's no reason he can't follow the trajectory of his £16.5m brother Harry and perform at a level that would see Premier League interest come his way. He just needs to ensure he keeps himself in the best possible shape. With a bit of luck, he has all the attributes to shine, although he will find Connor Goldson tough to shift from that right central defence berth he's most comfortable in.

Borna Barisic

The Croat has a year left on his deal and wouldn't bring in a huge fee were he to depart for a new club. Should an offer come in, Beale may wish to look at it, but if not, Barisic can certainly be counted on in domestic games to provide a high level of assists. While he's not the most dynamic and very one-footed, get the ball to him in the right areas and his quality of delivery is outstanding. He's had his ups and downs in a rollercoaster Rangers career but there's no need to press the panic button in this area quite yet. 

John Lundstram

Another with a year left on his deal, Lundstram was the hero of the Rangers support just 12 months ago after a series of incredible powerhouse performances en route to Seville. Blighted by niggly injuries this season, he'd be the first to admit he's been miles off that level. And yet, on Sunday he was part of a midfield that more than held their own against Celtic's much-vaunted trio. He delivered his best performance in a while and showed enough to suggest he's still got something to offer with the right energy and pace around him. When he's mentally and physically right, he's still a top player - as last season showed. Perhaps Lundstram will seek a new challenge, maybe Beale will encourage him , but the manager has always been effusive in his praise of the former Sheffield United battler.

Tom Lawrence

One of the biggest 'what ifs' of the season is surely what the extent of the Welshman's contribution would have been had injury not wiped him out in August. At the very least Lawrence's brilliant start in Royal Blue suggests he can be a major player when fully fit. Skillful, versatile and with a venomous shot, he can be huge weapon against teams employing the low block. With four goal contributions in four starts in the league, he was on course to be a key contributor to the season before injury against Ross County put paid to his impressive start. Scheduled to return towards the end of pre-season, Lawrence can offer an attacking boost to Beale, a coach who has openly admitted an admiration going back many years.

Kemar Roofe

While Rangers would likely snap anyone's hand off if a deal for their injury-prone striker was offered, such a scenario seems highly unlikely. And given any pay-off would be large, the club are better trying to get the Jamaican international going in the hope Beale can gently tease more games out of him. Make no mistake, if that happens, Rangers will have won a watch because the striker is the best at the club by a significant margin. A superb finisher, capable of the spectacular he's also versatile, clever, and able to play a number of positions, had he been fit all season it's unlikely Rangers would have been walking away from this term with no trophies. Getting him back to his best won't be easy, but should nobody come in, Beale will surely make an effort to ensure he's getting bang for his buck from a player people forget was top scorer when 55 was achieved.
