FORMER Rangers star Calvin Bassey has been cruelly described as 'Bambi on ice' by former Ajax star Kenneth Perez as criticism of his play intensified in the Netherlands.
The 22-year-old moved from Ibrox to Amsterdam in the summer in a £19 million move, but a string of unconvincing performances for the Dutch champions has led to him being slaughtered by harsh Dutch media.
Bassey played as Ajax lost at home to PSV Eindhoven and then drew at home with Vitesse Arnhem this week and Dutch TV pundit Perez - a former Danish international who had two spells with Ajax before helping Twente Enschede win the league in his last season as a player - was particularly scathing about Bassey and compared him to Disney's famous unsteady deer.
He said: "Calvin Bassey is just really funny to watch. Defensively, he is actually good, but he's very poor on the ball - like Bambi on ice.
"It's actually pathetic really because opponents now just allow him to travel with the ball and don't mark him."
Perez's comments followed more scathing criticism at the weekend from legendary former Dutch World Cup hero Johhny Rep who is the all-time top scorer for the Netherlands in the World Cup, including a screamer against Scotland in the 1978 tournament.
Rep said: "If you pay that sort of money for him that Ajax did then you are not feeling well.
"It is terrible to see him play. In the Eredivisie, there are ten better defenders than him."
