VAR controversy sparked a cheeky dig from Hibernian aimed at the officials after Rangers were awarded a penalty.

They wrote on their official X account: "Penalty to Rangers. Who had 20 minutes?"

Philippe Clement's men were given a spot kick after a lengthy VAR check for an apparent foul on John Souttar inside the area.

BBC Sportsound's Michael Stewart and Billy Dodds could not believe the penalty was awarded by referee David Dickinson following the check.

It was, however, uncharacteristically of James Tavernier, he missed after a good save by David Marshall. 

In further controversy, Scott Wright scored with the rebound, as the hosts thought they'd taken the lead in a vital game before next week's Old Firm derby.

But in another VAR check, the Rangers scorer was found guilty of encroachment as Tavernier was taking the penalty, and so the goal was ruled out, much to the amazement of everyone inside the stadium who were completely unaware of what the check was for.

Tavernier would eventually go on to score minutes later, giving Rangers the lead at Ibrox after a heated few moments.

If Rangers defeat Hibs today then they will go back to the summit of the Premiership table by two points, with Celtic playing away at Livingston tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Celtic's statement conveying their disappointment that Brendan Rodgers had been served with a Scottish FA ban gave Kris Boyd a 'good laugh' this midweek.

The Rangers hero insists the champions are kidding themselves on - branding the SFA's decision to suspend one of the matches as part of the two-game ban as 'weak'.

Rodgers attended a hearing at Hampden Park in front of the SFA's disciplinary panel on Thursday afternoon. It followed a notice of complaint filed after his comments about Don Robertson and John Beaton as his side lost 2-0 to Hearts in early March.
