Ianis Hagi has come out and defended himself amid his ongoing Rangers exile. 

The 25-year-old winger hasn’t featured for the Light Blues under Philippe Clement after previously making almost 100 appearances since arriving at the club in January 2020.

He spent last season on-loan with Deportivo Alaves and featured in all of Romania’s games at Euro 2024.

There had been lots of speculation about Hagi moving on from Ibrox and it was thought he had rejected several transfer options in his homeland.

Now taking to Instagram, the Romanian playmaker has told onlookers to only trust what comes from him or his agency - not personnel who don't know the full story.

He wrote: “With all due respect to the media, please stop quoting Giovanni Becali, and his comments as that of my agent or mine.

“He’s not my agent, I’ve been under contract with one football agency @actalent for more than 4 years and they’re the only people represent me and talk on my behalf.”

Romania head coach Mircea Lucescu addressed Hagi's ongoing Rangers exile before their 3-0 UEFA Nations League clash against Kosovo on Friday, a game in which Hagi played just seven minutes as a substitute.

“I think that’s what happens [that the players who play are called up], but it’s not just about the continuity in playing,” Lucescu said.

“There is also the term value. All the teams in Romania want Ianis, that is, he would automatically be present in the national team.

”He is going through a more difficult moment, you have seen what is happening there, but I am convinced that he will be able to get over this moment.

“We have to help him and those of us who are in this situation. Ianis trained permanently.”
