Three goals up within 20 minutes - Rangers quickly turned a potentially tricky cup tie into a comfortable evening on Friday.

On the back of three straight league defeats, an encouraging performance was required at Ibrox and Steven Gerrard reflected that intention with his team selection.

Only Connor Goldson, Joe Aribo and Scott Wright kept their place from midweek - but a strong team started as the Rangers manager utilised his squad depth.

Average positions

Rangers Review:

In a home match against a packed defence, this average positions map is exactly the type of shape Gerrard wants to see.

Both centre-backs are maintaining a high line, either full-back is providing the width and possessing high starting positions.

A double-pivot sees one of the two centre-midfielders slightly more advanced, Kemar Roofe is retaining offensive depth and the trio of Ianis Hagi, Scott Wright and Joe Aribo are all drifting centrally to create overloads and find space.

Those three behind Roofe are occupying areas the team didn't against Malmo. After the midweek defeat, Gerrard argued that his team didn't try to play into their front men more when they built possession around the box.

Aribo's assist for the fourth goal on Friday was a perfect example of why the manager wants his attacking midfielders to remain close to the central forward.

Pass networks

The pass network also makes for good reading from a home perspective. Both Calvin Bassey and Nathan Patterson fed the ball regularly into the attacking midfielders, Gerrard's side were able to stretch the pitch and dictate the width while both centre-backs looked forward.

Dunfermline's total lack of relationships during the match is shown by their passing network. They made just 115 passes throughout the whole game and only had one spell of possession that ended in the opposition box.

Rangers made 689 accurate passes, had a pure possession time of 41:24 and an xG of 3.16 to Dunfermline's 0.07.

Trendline

Rangers Review:

The race chart from the game is as expected. Rangers created a number of high-value chances by half-time before the game plateaued out - until the introduction of Alfredo Morelos led to another spell of pressure.

Alfredo Morelos has somewhat of a habit for taking low-value shots when he wants to get on the scoresheet - but when you're 5-0 up at home such ambition is justifiable.

Wright's goal had an xG chance rating of 0.13, demonstrating how well he took the opportunity after chopping onto his right foot. Hagi's goal was clinical and the highest-value open play chance of the game, thanks to Deniz Mehmet's poor positioning.

Other notable chances throughout the game saw Roofe head a cross straight at Mehmet and a Patterson close-range volley stopped.

Attacks by flanks

Rangers Review:

The story of the match was undoubtedly the performance of Calvin Bassey down the Ibrox side's left flank. His delivery has been sporadic at times, but he contributed two excellent assists and was a constant out ball for his side.

Throughout the 90 minutes, he had an xA of 1.19, made five successful dribbles, six successful crosses and 13 recoveries.
