Rangers recorded another win on the road on Sunday as they defeated Hibernian 3-1 at Easter Road.

Goals from James Tavernier, Ianis Hagi and Todd Cantwell were enough to see off Lee Johnson’s men and it was a well-deserved three points when we delve into the all-important stats.

Speaking afterwards, Michael Beale was full of praise for his side after a week of adversity. "The mentality of the group was absolutely fantastic because the preparation couldn’t have been any worse," he said.

"We lost Alfredo and Glen in training, Rabbi was on the bench but unable to come on. Scott Wright we lost overnight, Arfield came on but was playing through a problem.

"Coming to the game and knowing Hibs’ form I thought it might be interesting because we probably had 12 unavailable. The mentality of the starting team was outstanding and I thought we were clearly the better team. Hibs are fighting for a European place but you didn’t feel that in the game and I thought we were comfortable throughout, certainly after James’ free-kick."

As we can see below, Beale's assessment is spot on. The Ibrox club overperformed on their cumulative xG of 2.11 as well as dominating in the possession and pass completion areas.

Rangers would’ve won yesterday’s encounter almost seven times out of ten based on the chance creation.

Let’s take a closer look at the three goals…

James Tavernier

The skipper notched goal number 18 of the season on his milestone 400th club appearance with a clever free-kick that caught David Marshall out at his near post. It showed great invention although the Post-Shot xG figure of 0.05 tells us it was an effort that should’ve been dealt with better by the Hibs keeper.

Ianis Hagi

The Romanian’s long-awaited goal was one he savoured with an emotional celebration following his left-footed strike past Marshall. It was an effort of quality too, measuring a PostShot xG of 0.64 after his initial right-footed drive was blocked.

Rangers have missed numbers in the final third this season, players who may not be dominating a game and yet still possess the quality to turn it.

Looking forward, if the returning midfielder can get close to the 18 goal contributions offered in 2020/21, his impact could be significant.

Cantwell’s close-range finish was well taken also although Marshall may have done better from Tavernier’s initial strike towards goal. That being said, the former Norwich man showed good anticipation to capitalise on the rebound and round off an enjoyable afternoon in Leith.

Pass Network

As mentioned earlier, Rangers dominated proceedings in terms of the passing stats with 87 per cent of the 663 passes finding their intended target. However, as the diagrams show us below, Rangers still lacked fluency and potency in the final third.

It’s an area that will need strengthening in the summer if the Ibrox side are to challenge for the title.

An interesting takeaway from events at Easter Road was the intensity of Rangers' pressing. The graphic below tells us just how forceful the visitors were on both flanks.

Ridvan Yilmaz has impressed since being drafted into the side in recent weeks and we can see how hard the Turk is working to press the ball. He made 14 pressures against Hibs which was equalled by Fashion Sakala and only bettered by Tavernier (15) and Cantwell (19).

All in all, any win at Easter Road is always welcome and Rangers thoroughly deserved to emerge victorious despite not being at their scintillating best.

Yesterday's victory still highlighted the need for a potent frontline and as Beale stated, given the loss of key personnel, it was an impressive display.
